It's around that time of the year again ...any word of bonito appearing at any of the local piers? :)

I heard a few bonito caught at Marina del Rey (not technically a pier) in LA over the last couple weekends (at least one of them was using live sardines).

I’ve been going to the Oceanside pier once a week for bait, regular Mack’s are around. I’ve talked to a few of the regular pier guys, no bonito yet.

July is the time of the year you associate with bonito? I'm not saying that is wrong, just news to me.

For me, from past experience, people don't typically start catching bonito consistently from the shore or piers (assuming they show up) until mid to late September.

That's good, that means there's still time then, especially to prepare. :)

I do remember last August at IB pier the bonito already showed up, but were smaller sized like mackerels. They were getting caught with sabiki-type rigs with the green feathers.

2017 was an awesome year at OB with bonito-sized mackerel (really fun to fight on light tackle) and larger grade bonito as well. 2020 was a good year too where I caught my first limit of bonito. :)

IB pier is fully open also, I wonder when that happened and if there were any epic bites since then.

Any size to them Mike? Thanks for the update, even if I'll probably never get over there to fish them...

Small ones and they were gone the next day.
