ALL of our lakes are a sad sight to see with the exception of maybe Lake Murray. Even San V is reaching its limit as far as low water. It sucks!

The mandate in CA/SD to build more housing leads one to wonder where the water will come from to provide for all those new residents.
Having the reservoirs all so low is a danger to the county.
Its true, some current dams have been flagged by the state as a potential hazard with the lake at full capacity .
Fix the dams!

Unfortunately the powers that be in the current city government dont have their priorities straight & are only good at mismanagement.

I think they were talking about piping it from the carlsbad desal plant. A lot of the funding for dams and water infrastructure is matched by the feds. Wonder how much of that was taken away in the doge fiasco considering we're now finding out they mostly targeted blue states.

Is the county required to state exactly what is happening and why when it comes to our lake water levels? From a quick glance I’ve noticed that the reasons given tend to be very vague. We still don’t know what’s going to happen with Hodges even though the dam problems have been known for decades.

The county is "selling" our "surplus" water to Riverside and Inland Empire. What they are doing is essentially taking the water that we would normally receive from the Colorado River and sending it directly to those counties. So we are not receiving water from the Colorado River at all. I don't who the F*#@ in the county offices thinks we don't need that water in our own reservoirs but its a joke! We are paying the price for their mismanagement of their money.

The San Diego County Water Authority isn't bravely defending "your water" from the evil empire to the north. It's trying to dig itself out from under decades of expensive long-term water contracts and debt. Between the Carlsbad desalination plant, premium-priced IID transfers, and conservation reducing demand, San Diego wound up buying more imported water than it actually needed. So yes—they move surplus water to agencies like Riverside. That's not theft. That's trying to recover some money after buying Costco-sized pallets of water when the family only needed a six-pack.

Meanwhile, people see Hodges or El Capitan sitting low and immediately conclude, "Riverside stole our water!" That's like walking into a grocery store, seeing one shelf empty, and concluding there's a nationwide potato famine. Reservoirs are operated for reliability, water quality, maintenance, flood control, dam safety, operational flexibility, and about fifty other reasons that don't fit on a Facebook meme.

The funniest part is watching people act like every reservoir is supposed to look like Lake Tahoe year-round. Municipal reservoirs aren't decorative landscape features. They're giant steel-and-concrete batteries for drinking water. Sometimes they're full. Sometimes they're drawn down. Sometimes they're intentionally kept lower because engineers tend to have more influence over reservoir operations than angry guys with bass boats and a Wi-Fi connection.

If you want to compare systems, look north. Metropolitan's and DWR's storage network was built to move and bank enormous volumes of imported water across Southern California. San Diego's system has a completely different set of constraints and financial obligations. Comparing the two without understanding how they're operated is like comparing LAX to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport and concluding one forgot how to land airplanes.

And let's be honest. Water agencies don't wake up in the morning wondering how they can improve your fishing. If they had their way, every reservoir would have an eight-foot chain-link fence, twenty "KEEP OUT" signs, a security camera every hundred yards, and a press release explaining that "recreational access presents unnecessary operational risk."

So no... Riverside didn't sneak into San Diego in the middle of the night with a giant siphon hose. San Diego is dealing with the consequences of decades of water planning, expensive supply diversification, conservation reducing demand, and the awkward realization that buying insurance is expensive when the disaster never shows up.

But don't let any of that get in the way of a good Facebook conspiracy. Those have a much higher recharge rate than the reservoirs.

And hey... at least the Padres are doing better than your reservoirs.

I agree with some that Dark shadow said above. I have been following this for many years, the problem is the dams that were built many years ago and NOT maintained( the City does not maintain anything they own). Yes the primary purpose is to provide drinking water, but when they were sold to the City years ago part of the agreement was to let people recreate on them. What would you rather drink....Colorado water or tap to toilet water? Fix the F...G dams, that is a start.Get some people in the PUD who actually care about the lakes. I can go on and on but the damage is already done.
