Upper Bay, Tidelands to Ferry Landing-ish...

Float tubes are a convenient and affordable way to get on the water, and finally get to those fish that you can't reach from shore. Discuss float tubes, outfitting float tubes for fishing, and float tube fishing.

Upper Bay, Tidelands to Ferry Landing-ish...

Post by Carpkiller »

Rode the tide out and back. The bite was okay...not great. Got 9 spotties, one sandy and one calico, ranging from dink to ....small.

Here's where we (and the tide) turned....old pic for attention...

I guess the bigger fish are out in the no-tell motel in deeper water.

Nothing chasing bait on top..except one needlefish. No birds working.

Threw grubs, small swimbaits chatterbaits, and ScorcherZ (tubes). Everything got bit here and there. No hot spots or baits for me.

The other guy got 2x the number of my fish, including a small halibut.

After a bit of an adventure on a kayak Friday, got back in the tube today. On the 'yak, I condensed all my terminal tackle down to what fit in the pockets of my pdf vest...turns out, I don't have to carry 17 lbs of plastics every trip.

Live and learn.
I went to Balboa Island and laid in the sand,
I may be ugly as hell but at least now I'm tan....

The other guy got most of them using Carpkiller's 5" curly tail grubs on a 1/4 ounce 2/0 EWG jig head, drag and pause retrieve (https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Decoy_V ... 44QAvD_BwE ). Only tried 2 colors (orange and green), both worked.

Despite all the other lures out there, it's hard to beat a curly tail grub for spotties. Years ago, I bought this book and it said to fish curly tail grubs for spotties: https://www.amazon.com/Mike-Gardners-Fi ... 096493311X . Still works. Got most fish in 6-9' of water, a few long lining in >30' of water. Getting close to spotty spawning time when the adults migrate to the mouth of the bay, that slows down fishing near the bridge area.

Being Memorial Day, there were some crazy jet skiers out there. One came within about 6' of the fishing dock south of the ferry landing at full speed, the guys fishing from the dock were not happy about it. If you were swimming in the water next to the shore, you could have been killed by those idiots. The bay is a half mile wide at that spot, why do they have to come close to the shore?
