5/13- A warm welcome back

Post by Osidecoffee »

I gotta say, I was a little worried that my first Barrett trip might be a bit of a letdown. It was only going to be my second time out there, and first time with a proper setup. The expectations were gonna be sky high with the extra largemouth experience I’ve built on my tube this year. It ain’t much, but it’s way more than I had last year! The algae stories were a little scary, and if it was tough for you all, I wasn’t quite sure what it would be for me…

All in all, it was a fun trip! We felt the algae effect for sure, but we were able to worm our way around the lake with some good success. I fished a Neko rig most of the day and didn’t have too many problems fishing the edges of the trees & brush. By the afternoon, it was pretty much all you can catch dinks up shallow, but at least they were nice and feisty! The highlight of my day came when I swapped my ultralight over to a dropshot, and got to play with some drag ripping slabs! I had a pack of small fuzzy dice to use, and they were all over it. Can’t wait to get out there again and try for more bluegill throughout the day with the UL dropshot. My buddy and I combined for about 70-80 fish after putting in a full day, with him slightly edging me out on the bass . It Can’t wait to put in some more time on such a special fishery!

Which brand of dice did you use? Most of them look large for bluegill.

I had some OSP dice, they’re on the small side for sure. And even then, they might not work quite the same at lakes with traditional sized panfish haha. They’re super pricy normally, but I basically got them as throw ins with some bulk tackle purchases.

I ordered these, might cut them in half for bluegill size and Texas rig on a drop shot with a small baitholder hook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DRVKFD97/re ... hcmVk&th=1

Looks like they’d work for sure if you cut them down into a few smaller chunks. I think these dice are 12mm, and I had them on a size 1 mosquito light. The first bluegill I got on them had the whole hook & dice in his mouth!
