Hodges Crappies

So,

As everyone knows Hodges opened last week. I've been starving for a crappie bite all year. I had to go. Plus the kids have been asking to get out as well. Thought it was the perfect opportunity for both.

Got there in line before it opened to ensure we got a rental.

The ramp is now the parking lot

Its going to be crowded out there so expect that.

Right now... the bite is excellent. We just trolled through the schools picking them up. Kids got on board right away which is all I really wanted with my son having the HOT STICK! He had 3 before we got our 1st ones. Here is his 1st slab

My daughter got on board with this double they both got.

I made sure they were going good before I got my rods out. Once I got out there it was really on!

The bite was steady. You would have a few pauses in the actions but not long before it picked back up. We are trolling along and I get another hit... but this feels waaaaaaay different. To heavy for a crappie so I thought it was bass at first. But then it just never came up and started peeling drag. I'm only using 4 lb test. After a 5 min fight it finally revealed itself. An 8 pound catfish.

Had a real good time with the kids.

Seen a few folks out there... I'm sure Blackcloud9 got his limit as he was out there killing it as usual. You just got to get used to the lake being this low I guess. We was fishing in 10 to 14 ft of water. I went down towards the dam just to check it out and it is still only maybe 36 ft down that way.

We caught a BUNCH. Kept some, released some. Nothing over 2 pounds but solid 1.5 - 1.75 pounders.

Tight lines!

Score! Going to have to hop in my tube and hit it up if I can break away from the bass.

On a side question, have you fished at Wohlford for crappie lately?

Sure was great to see you and the kids getting in on the fun crappie action. Even saw you guys with a couple double-hookups! That day I released more than a dozen, caught a whole bunch more and kept nine better ones for dinner.

Went back for 2nds.

This time I got Dave out of his nice cushy crappie machine and into a good old fashion flat bottom rental. Fished moved on me but it only took a hour or so to re-locate them. Live scope not needed. Then we proceeded with the beat down.

Hammered them until we left at noon.

Have you ever tried to bleed and brain them before putting them on ice?
