Pacific Beach Tuesday Sept 23

I fished the surf south of Crystal pier about 8:30-10:00 this morning. Sand crabs are plentiful under the pier, with roe and some soft shells. Grass was minimal. Water felt colder. Bite was very slow, only a few bite surgically stealing roe. So I switched to the smallest crabs with roe I could find and caught 2 hand sized perch.

Skunk avoided, I put on a last crab. Thought I felt a hit, tension but no movement, I set the hook anyway into what I figured was a clump of kelp (very little out there but I was seeing some as the tide came in). Reeled dead weight for a bit, then it moved, felt like a small ray. I was convinced it was a ray until the fish woke up and I saw a silver flash 10 feet in front of me. Dinner - a 19 inch or so SFC.

Last crab is the magic crab… Funny how thaw fish that can fight the hardest, sometimes doesn’t… Way to wade through the BSP to get to that spot fin… 19” ain’t bad…
