As Summer Fades, Fishing Will Start To Heat Up

Welp, summer has come to a close up on the high prairie and soon all the trout will start getting active for the winter. It definitely has been a slow summer, as we had a dry-ish winter up here, and a lot of the reservoirs had more water drained out of them than water flowing in. I caught a few small fish when I went out this summer, but nothing very picture worthy....a few graylings, a bunch of little stocker rainbows and a cutthroat here and there. It's always pretty up in the mountains though.

We finally had some cool weather last weekend, and hoped some larger trout might be stirring early, but alas, I hooked up with my biggest catch up here so far, but not a trout. Still, a fish is a fish, and I caught this one which was just shy of 22 pounds on a little 1/4 ounce trout spoon an ultralight rig.

Oh well, it was a good battle, and maybe I will get a bigger lake trout as the weather gets frosty.

Golden Trout! And a healthy one too! Thanks Mimi for taking us out of this dry dust for a few moments!

Nice catches, when you say up here, I’m not sure where you’re talking about. I’m looking at pictures. Could be Cuyamaca area. Just curious where are you?

I live in Southwestern Wyoming these days, so most of the mountain fishing is north of me near Pinedale, or south of me in the Uinta mountains of Utah. All the shots that look like desert are at lakes like Big Sandy, Fontenelle and Flaming Gorge reservoirs. I don't think any of where I fish now looks much like Cuyamaca, a place that I spent many a happy afternoon at, fishing for bass, panfish and rainbows.
