Murray 9/11

I remember maybe 10 years ago I had decided that jigs were some kind of elaborate joke created by pros and perpetrated on us mere mortals. Over the years I had tried jigs on numerous occasions, and all I ever caught was grass, moss, and tree branches. Not to mention losing a bunch of them after getting hopelessly wedged in rocks.
Then one day I tied on a 1/4 ounce jig, with a small trailer and voila! A FISH. For me, a lightweight (1/8 to 1/4 oz.) jig has become by far my most reliable producer of bass. Of course over time I have learned to really feel the structure. Is it a tree, or grass? Am I pulling it over rocks or moss? Now that I have that info. I am able to work my jig over and around different types of structure without getting hung very often -well if I am paying attention that is haha.
Today was a 7 fish day at Murray. All in the 2 pound range, but still a lot of fun. Most of them were caught on the fall at the edge of tules, especially where they adjoined rocky bottom areas.
If you are like I was, and haven't yet done well with jigs I'd encourage you to downsize and keep at it. Outside of topwater it has definitely become my favorite way to fish.
Tight lines all.

Will join in the early doubter-now promoter of jigs crowd. Didn’t hurt seeing Pourboys videos either but the now love affair started at the Cap 2 seasons back with that years best bass and has grown since. And downsizing helps if its not an all out bite or in clearer water.

You have proven time after time that you
have the jig down to a science fooling bass
at every lake you go to. The bass at Murray
can be very finicky and catching bass on a
Jig is pretty awesome seeing that so many
bass are feeding on shad. Nice job buddy!
Hopefully will see you on the lake soon.
Tight lines always

Haha I just think it's weird that they've gone from "they don't work" to my default go to.

I've picked up many topwater and swimbait/fluke bass too at Murray in the last couple of weeks brother. But with so much bait in the water it can take what seems like a thousand casts to get one. And a lot of them are dinks chasing schools of really small bait. I've started to think there are always fish hanging out on the bottom looking for an easy meal, one they don't have to expend a ton of energy on. And most of the bigger fish I've caught lately have been in jigs. I dunno why.
There were lots of boats on the water yesterday at Murray (probably because El Cap is closed to boat launches). They were all over the lake fishing bait balls. They probably thought I was a newbie fishing the edge of the tules, but I did ok. I saw them catch fish, but a lot of them were dinks.

You ain’t no “newbie” brother and when they start seeing your rod bending so many times with so many fish they’re gonna realize like i did when I first started seeing you on the lake and said to myself…. “dang, that guy knows how to catch bass!”

I love tiny jigs!!
My fav trick the last few years is tiny arkie head, big body(slow fall) jig, fished in the rockiest areas on light line, but never let the jig fall in the holes. Fished real slow but never stopped or allowed to fall backward. Rock to rock to rock on a taught line. I still lose some but not enough to ruin the day usually.
