Day 1- Hiked into Ramona at sunrise. After about 45 minutes my dog got a foxtail burr in her ear, so we hiked back out and went to the animal hospital. No fish for you.
Day 2- South bay shallows mud flats hoping for exotics.Very windy, very poor fishing. 1 bone and 2 nice vines in 5 hours.(no pics)
Day 3- Deep water jig drift. Rode the tide up and back. 14 spotties in 5 hours. No pigs, no dinks. Cute jigs, light line, and Hotsauce. Fought something nicer sized but it popped off right under my feet and didnt get to see it. Bummer.

Like always nice report. I should’ve hit the bay yesterday but laziness got in the way.

Cool. I had a slow day this weekend, too. Feels better reading some of these similar reports.

Prolly one of these. 30 braid/15 Flouro, now I land those “got away” fish. Still using my 2500 reel and 7 foot rod, with Flouro it seems line weight doesn’t matter. I used 15 because the knots cinch up easy.Don’t know why my pics show up sideways now.

No, felt more like a 3lb bass. Also the line didn't break, it just came off. I use light line a lot, and almost never break off.

I know people that use 80lb braid and 30 floro. I also know people that use 20lb for spotties. Free country. I prefer light line.

It is all in the hookset. You can fish as light a drag as you want no matter what line test you are using. The problem is when they run for cover, pilings you can’t stop them.

Question: do you really think the skirted jigs with the double tail plastics work better in the bay? I have tried them and caught fish on them but I haven't found any thing that works better than a simple single curly tail grub on a jig head. I will use a variety of jig heads depending on how much grass is in the area. My second choice would be some sort of paddle tail bait, the old school Mr. Twisters work as well as slimmer baits like Zoom Super Swimming Fluke Jr. lures. Big Hammer is good too. But mostly I buy bulk from
https://www.lockettluresoutlet.com/index.html as spotties don't seem to be choosy.

I dont think they work better at all, I just think they're cooler. Also tend to attract bigger fish

They do look awesome. I suspect they attract bigger fish simply because the profile and water displacement is larger. Going to larger curly tail grubs produces larger but fewer spotties too.
