Homemade chatterbait, 10lb mono.

I took me 10 tries to get her in the net. Evertime I got her head in, she would back out and shoot down. This fish knew exactly what a net was and exactly how to avoid it. I finally got her in because she was exhausted. Then the lure fell right out.

Absolute tank. There’s no line class record for 10lb, it’s all yours!😆 For all the stories I’ve heard of someone losing “ a 4ft long halibut at the net”, you got her in the bag! Time for a gaff.

Halibut always find a second wind of fight when pulling their head out of the water. I like to tire them out for a few minutes, lightening my drag and letting them run and just tire them out. Trying to net one the first chance you get can be a mess and a funny show for onlookers.

Nice fish! Catching fish on a homemade lure is definitely a great feeling

Yeah, it is. To me homemade means "of your own design". There's nothing proprietary about my chatterbaits, they're made with parts available online. Even my current jig heads are available online. My spinnerbaits and buzzbaits are still made on a custom mold and many of my trailers are of my own design and making. 99% of my big fish are caught on homemade or home built lures.

Fyi- this isnt my pb.

There was a time in the early 90s when i life dream was to catch a legal halibut. I fished the bay every weekend. My first legal was 30" on live bait and eventually i had several under my belt. Soon my fishing dream was catch a legal hali in a lure. Took a couple years, then i got 2 in the same week!

Fast foward.... ive caught roughly 150 legal halis on lures in the bays.(impossible to keep accurate records for 33 years)

42" 29lbs is my pb on homemade spinnerbait. The one in the thread was 40" about about 26 lbs.

As a young guy, I would hear of guys catching nice halibut like what you catch, from the guys at the tackle shop at the Ingraham street bridge.
When it was a wooden bridge from telephone poles. Those are trophies.
Thank you for sharing those amazing pictures.
Time sure flies.
Take care

This must be why I never get any legal halibut, you caught them all!! Awesome fish. I need to get a kayak or something to get away from the shore!

I miss those days when it was affordable to take a boat out all the time… nothing beats flatty fishing

Bounce Balling at 1.5 Knots Can be killer , out does Bait drifting 2:1 as I see it . Good thread here .

I get the advantage, never done it. I know the “purists” are against it. I’d rather fish big butts on a hear bass rod with “light” line. The bounce ballers use heavy gear. Good for meat but takes the battle out of it.
