Did some night fishing at mission bay. Still pretty slow but got 2 runs one spit and the other was this 75 lb or so bat ray on frozen grunion. Put up a great fight

Mud marlin. I foul hook one every now and then fishing lead head grubs for spotties and they take forever to land on light line. Biggest I have ever had was about 20 lbs, much more stubborn than halibut. Like fighting a snag that decides to move a couple of feet every few minutes.
I have heard you can make fake scallops out of the wings with a cookie cutter but never tried it myself. I have had manta ray in Baja and it is a very bloody fish, more like mackerel than scallops.
Nice one.

That's a big ray, nice job landing it! If that is the part of Mission Bay I think it is, there are A LOT of sting rays and bat rays there, especially in winter. Like Gotfish mentioned, most of them foul hooked. I think the ray sees the lure/fly and smothers it like a carpet against the bottom and tries to work it towards its mouth, but we set the hook before it gets into its mouth and thus foul hook it (at least that's my theory). I really don't like catching them and don't like having to unhook them when on the float tube.

What’s the best spot this time of year for MB mid marlins? De Anza cove? Been in a long hiatus after having a daughter.
