What a challenge 2/11

I got to Murray this morning forgetting it was the second Tuesday of the month and it was closed, so I pivoted and went to Mission Bay instead.
I launched from Dana Landing at around 8:30 and the tide was high. I landed a couple of small spotties among the anchored boats, when Fish and Game pulled up asking to see my license which I promptly produced. I was certain it was due to expire on 3/2. Well on inspection it had expired on 2/3. Fortunately the guy gave me a break, and I promptly kicked to the ramp, got out, and bought a new license and Ocean Enhancement stamp at the Dana Landing store.
Now, back on the water, I kicked out of the launch area through the moored boats, and headed west out under the overpass toward the mouth of the Bay. This proved to be a mistake as the tide turned, and was rushing out quite aggressively. I had the Bixpy motor at it's highest speed and kicking frantically, and was still barely making headway trying to head back in.
It was then that a mini disaster struck. One of my straps broke, and I watched helplessly as my fin and shoe washed rapidly out to sea. Now, left with just a left fin and motor, I had quite a challenge ahead. Even with a motor fins are essential for not just thrust, but effective navigation as well....uugh. Fortunately, I was able to make my way closer to the rocky bank where the water was shallower and the outgoing current was a bit less strong. Unfortunately, there is a lot more eel grass along the rocks as well, so I was quite concerned about that fouling my only effective way of moving forward sans both fins.
Well it took me nearly an hour to finally get back that 1/4 mile or so to the protected landing area, and I was stressed and relieved at the same time. I mean I had my cell phone with me, and could have called for help had I really needed to, but fortunately that didn't become necessary.
Anyway, I ordered some new fins with a step in design, that will hopefully be a bit more secure. Still, I think I will stick to lakes for a few weeks.....whew.

That is quite an adventure you went through starting from Lake Murray being closed and then going to the bay and all the stuff that happened in between. I would be exhausted after all of that. I could feel your pain through every sentence you wrote. Strange to see a saltwater bass in the freshwater bass section, but after you went through all I can say is I look forward to seeing you at Lake Murray, and back on the freshwater scene.
Tight lines always

Sorry if I posted it in the wrong section. Force of habit I guess.

Glad you came out unscathed, for the most part. ;/o

No worries.
Still amazed of everything that you
went through. Dang! If I didn’t have a bunch of work to do yesterday morning, I probably would’ve drove up to Murray also.

Get a pair of keeper straps like
https://www.amazon.com/Kicker-Keepers-T ... B00EU8RD6M or make your own. I had a buddy tell me to do that when I 1st started tubing, he said it was awful when you lose a fin. Never had a fin come loose yet though.
I like your excuse but what if the day of the month is >12: "sorry officer, I thought my license expired on 14/1 not 1/14"?

The CDFW App is pretty darn handy. Your current licenses are right there in the app, and you can even buy or renew through it. Your license will automatically populate in the app and they send you the hard copy in the mail. Pretty handy if you forget your paper license, just open the app and show it to the warden! A CA govt agency that actually works (kinda), imagine that lol

Seriously…glad the DFW guys gave you a break. They usually don’t. Even tho I prefer the 365 day license, it does lead to forgetting the expiration easier.
Secondly, man thats a bit harrowing story fighting a tide, let alone without both fins. Glad you got back in one piece. I have had one good battle against wind and chop and can only imagine your ordeal.

Sounds like you got a work out.
I just pulled out some fins that I use that I can't see being sold anymore, and they are the Hot Spot fins. I think they float.

I buy my license at the beginning of the New Year so I always know when it is going to expire.
I always have a license and buy a permit and bugs me when guys don't. I did get a verbal warning at Lake Jennings many decades ago from the "old" Bud(not the Bud who worked in the concession stand). I was worming and a bass jumped so I grabbed the other rod and threw a Zara spook while the other line was in the water. He was really
nice and just warned me and since that happened I have always bought a second rod option.

I can start my day at the grocery store and then later rob a bank and the news will only focus on the bank robbed....ha ha.

I forgot about the strap! Doh! Glad everything worked out. Let's get back out there soon.

You live to fish another day. Wiser, graduating from the school of hard knocks. It's nice to get a break sometime.

Here are the new fins I ordered. I have always used the kind where you put your toes in and stretch a bubber strap around the back of your heel. The problem has arisen lately that the thrust from the Bixpy motor wants to push the rubber strap off of my heel. Hopefully these will be more secure.
I wear Crocs over stocking foot waders.
