Just saw an alarming article in the UT today, front page. City Council wants to take rates up for Barrett another 34% for users. From $30.00 to $45.00! I have a call out to Bryan Norris(619.668.2014) for clarifications.......stay tuned. Meanwhile please don't hesitate to call your local City Council Rep........this is BS.

Quick update Junkies......Just spoke with Bryan, this is way above his pay grade. All of the info is available for public view on the City of SD website...."Public Utilities Fiscal Year 2026 User Fees". In the overview it says "a comprehensive user fee study every three to five years" We just went thru that in 2023 were they increased the fees across the board! Specifically Barrett boat motor rental went from $80.00 to $100.00(25%) and user fee from $20.00 to $30.00(50%). The new proposed fees for a boat motor rental at Barrett will go from $100.00 to $150.00......again that is BS. Please spread the word Junkies.....we need to be on this NOW. Your local City Council Rep and the Mayor need to know how u feel. Also the two people listed below are the ones who proposed these increases. It still puzzles me to no end that walkers, joggers, etc( and nothing against them) pay nothing at Mirimar and Murry......what an uptapped source of revenue. Stay tuned.

Back to off season fishing…
Someone has to pay for all those future lawsuits and “proofing” of California.

Friday update: This situation with all these increases is real, and it is being discussed and proposed as we speak. If u do not live in the City please contact the Mayors office thru the City of SD website. You can "send me a message" or "request a meeting". I requested a meeting, lets see what happens. There will be discussions before the council that allows public input, I am working with a Community Representative to the Mayor(Fatima Maciel) who said she will can get help me thru the public review process. When I get that schedule from her I will post it and maybe we can form a group to address the Council. The time to act is now. I believe these increases will hurt the future of fishing at Barrett. Stay tuned(and informed).

PS please spread the word

Here's a question for all you Barrett Junkies.

What is the maximum amount you're willing to spend for a boat reservation? At what point do you say, "nope?"

Thank you TommyP for this information. I couldn't find the proposal anywhere on the website, I must be looking in the wrong place. Barrett is an amazing place and we should let our voices be heard. I'm more worried that they might slowly ( or not ) price the access out of reach to close the lake and not maintain anything.

There's something like 65 contact days at Barrett, if we say there are 10 boats at $150 and 30 tubes/kayaks/other at $45 each day ( there probably isn't), they would be making around $185,000 per season. Currently it's around $123,500. Does that $61,000 difference change the overall budget much? This feels more sneaky to me, but I could be wrong.

Early release, I am trying to get the steps I took to find the Staff Report(1/25/2025) that I am getting this info from. It is tricky navigating thru the City website trying to find it. Stay tuned. Meanwhile I sent a email to Hooman and the Mayor about the debacle that took place opening day at Hodges. And they want to increase the user fees?

If you call Bryan Norris(616.668.2014) he led me thru the locating process for the document entitled Public Utilities FY 2026 User Fee, Staff Report(1/25/2025). This is public info. I hope to join a zoom meeting of the council Monday 2/10/25 to express my opposition. Everyone is invited.

I got my moment of fame last night before the City Council, actually it was pretty cool. There must have been a lot of participation because they divide the time they allocate by the number of people either calling in, zooming, or appearing live. The result was 1 minute per comment, I got cut off from my prepared statement, but I think I got the point across. This issue is not decided yet, keep up the pressure. Subject your emails Item 600 FY 2026 Updated Budget Priorities Resolution.

The fight continues.....I guess this is what retirement is all about. I requested a 1 on 1 with the Mayor and yesterday received an email that the request was granted.....just waiting for the date and time from his office. Stay tuned.
