Would a 70 size reel work for most applications? I’ve found good deals on Shimano DC reels but they are on the 70 size. Thank you.

I use 70 size baitcasting reels for the bay and freshwater lakes, spooled with 6-10 lb mono and for casting 3/16-1/2 ounce lures. They would not work for offshore tuna, yellowtail or rock cod fishing.

I’m crazy about using 70 size reel for anything, at one point I had 4 Curado 70 plus 2 of 50 series.
70 size spool can get only 80 yds of 12lb hybrid or 15lb Abrazx. Using larger line that get deep into arbor quick will rob you some distance. It best to use with 8-10lb copolymer. I op to 30lb braid for heavier applications like Jig, frog or any top water. You can also use 10-15lb braid for saltwater finesse.

Yes this would be for bass fishing only. If I had 2 set ups to cover all my bases, a Med/Heavy and a lighter one, what would you suggest I spool these 2 70s with?

I would do one with 8lb copolymer on 10lb FC for lighter, say weightless plastics (Senko), jerkbait medium crankbait or light Texas rig, free rig. For MH which will cover something like chatter bait, spinnerbait, lipless crank topwater or jig 30lb braids would be fine.

Awesome. Appreciate the info. Should I look for a L or ML rod?

I would go with Medium for more applications but medium or ML on different rod company is not the same. Some ML rod is also perfect for lot of thing and will aids casting lighter lure.
Example I love my Medium Shimano Crucial but ML on newer Shimano Zodias is about the same rod action just lightly softer perfect for fluke and jerkbait. Another Medium Shimano Compre with the softess tip of them all perfect for weightless wacky rig or 1/15oz Ned rig. I own a lot more rods than reels.

I have had the https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Phenix_ ... -PMMA.html medium light for several years and really like it. I did wrap some tape around the fore grip area as I like a beefier section there. It casts a 1/5 ounce Ned rig or most weightless plastics really well. I think it was about $160 when I 1st got it.
