A Slow Summer and Winter coming on up north

Early summer started off with a bang up in northern prairieland. The Uinta mountains offered up great trout fishing in June, and the Flaming Gorge still had some hungry trout near the shorelines. As summer wore on and the mountain lakes had their water drawn down for irrigation duty (and the creek systems were rotenoned to get rid what local biologists deemed as pesky invasive species (brook trout), the hot bite waned considerably.

I spent the rest of the summer either trail riding in the mountains or trying my luck fishing in the big ugly desert lake just north of where I live.
By September, I was missing the green bassies of home more than ever, and had not caught any more smallies since last spring. So on the weekend of my birthday, I drove 104 miles to Steineker reservoir near Vernal Utah, just to spend a couple of hours catching little large mouth bass on a brush covered mud flat Though none of the fish I caught were over a foot long, the whole endeavor made me very happy.
Now the first snows have come to the northland, and I have been scurrying around trying to catch fish from the Gorge and the desert lake before weather gets cold enough to freeze over the open water...especially on the desert lake where temps are typically a lot colder. Part of that lake has already frozen over in the shallow arm.

Soon, fishing adventures will be limited by weather and road conditions (and those pesky work weeks), so getting as many fishing days in as I can right now is priority.

Good lookin fish. Looks like good times to me. I have to admit as I get older I don’t like cold as much. Keep it up!

So awesome! How often do you see another fisherman when you’re out? Looks like some peaceful, un crowded fishing

There are very few people out on the waters. Often, the most are on Flaming Gorge. Some of the mountain and desert lakes only have a handful of people at the most. Many times, I have the water to myself.
