Quick morning trip to the SD River and a quick lesson learned.......just leave the rod with mono at home. I usually just take 2 rods rigged with braid line and this morning took an extra rod with 12 lb mono. Heck,I figured that would be fine. Well, later I started flippin a Rage craw with it into cover. Then got bit, set the hook and it felt like a really nice bass as it headed deep in the cover and the line snapped! I should have known better and just used that rod for a fluke or jerk bait, spinnerbait etc,...but I can only blame myself.
I was not there long, and only had one other bite and managed to land a bass on a Brushhog.
Still thinking the whole way home(and actually right now) about that other bass snapping my line.
Oh well......its all part of bass fishing.

Are you sure you didn't have a nick in the line? Did it get you into hard cover?

Usually mono is stretchier than FC which I guess technically makes it more impact resistant, but who knows.

I'm mad because i picked up a big spool of Sunline Defier that I use for topwater and cranking, and I think the eBay seller sold me an old spool because I'm having major issues getting knots to not break when I tighten them.

I'd return it, but at this point, buyer beware.

When I put a bait on, I cut the line back usually a foot. I do this every time I tie on a new bait. There could have been a nick further up the line or the line went across a rock. All I know is I couldn’t turn the direction of the bass and bummed when the line broke. Like a decade ago, I think I had a bad batch of mono that was breaking way too much is probably the only time I remember really noticing something was wrong with a line. I threw it away and got another spool and had no problems.
Sorry to hear about your experience with the line you bought on eBay. That’s a bummer!

They don't call straight braid "Kelp Cutters" for no reason. I totally understand were you are coming from. We fishermen are optimists by nature.

Caught a number of 4's and 5's which is always fun and caught some in the 6lb range, but have not been able to break past that. I came very close as my PB at the river was one just a few ounces under 7 lbs on a Tokyo rig/Googan Krackin craw.

Snap!! I still have nightmares about that sound as a kid in Mammoth losing a big brown. Pretty sure that you will redeem yourself.

It is great to have a memory, but sometimes it is sad that we can remember losing a big fish?
When I am fishing at any lake or body of water especially at Murray, I can actually show spots,
the lure I was using and what happened where a big fish came off. Again all part of fishing.

What??? You weren't throwing your standard 120lb test from Rite Aid??

What??? You weren't throwing your standard 120lb test from Rite Aid??

No, I ran out of that line and don't you remember telling me to switch over to Ace Hardware because the line is cheaper.....sadly, they only go up to 30lb test.....still a great deal.
You sure know how to save money.

Nice report vinny ... I see that junebug color a lot,still hits this late in the year? I usually throwing it in june Haven't had much luck with purples this year thou ...maybe winter is different

What is funny is I don't think I even had a bait in the junebug color till this year or could of had some and never really threw them much.
I have heard few years back that it is a great color to use at Hodges early in the year. I pulled out a number of bags of brush hogs that were sitting idle in the garage for years that were almost all pumpkin related colors. I usually throw pumpkin colored craw baits at the the river, but the water is pretty stained and for some reason just decided to
something a little brighter or maybe easier for the bassto see. So I got some junebug colored brushhogs and caught bass at the river. I have caught bass at Murray also on the junebug color and ordered many more bags of them for future fishing.
Lately, other than the river I have not tossed them or any plastic worms in a few months at Murray as I keep chasing bass going after shad with reaction baits in the middle areas of the lake. Eventually(in the winter) I will start working points and structure again at Murray with brushhogs, jigs, crawbaits and plastic worms... but for now I've been having a lot more action tossing reaction baits.
