9/13- SD River surprise

I thought of going to Murray, but honest, I'm there so often that sometimes it gets old, even
when the fish are biting. It's been a few weeks since I fished the SD River so I thought what
the heck...and there are no permit fees so I
can use the money saved for more fishing tackle.
I was excited for a while, but after a few hours going through a selection of reaction baits and then plastics....I started to feel a little less optimistic. I was landing baits in spots that almost felt guaranteed a bass would be there waiting to gobble up my bait. I just kept working the cover and got to the point where I started even tossing smaller brush hogs and craw baits . Now I was at the point where if I even felt a little tap(even a bluegill swimming by and accidentally hitting my line), I would be happy. I started to daydream thinking of titles for my fish report with the word "skunk" in it........and out of the blue, something picked up my craw bait. I didn't want to lose the fish so I set the hook so hard that I launched the bass right out of the water and several feet in the air as it was a tiny bass that saved me from a skunk. I felt so relieved as I let the little bugger go and continued to flip the craw bait with slim hopes of catching another bass. I tossed my craw bait right in the middle of a bunch of sunken branches and suddenly a bass grabbed it and nearly yanked my rod out of my hands. The bass was digging in different directions through the branches and I thought there is no way I was gonna land him and he will come off any second. Finally with my line tangled all over in the stick-ups, I was able to pull him close enough to finally grab him....a healthy 5lbs on the button. Heck yeah!(I might have said something I cannot post on here..ha ha).
Geez, I went from a morning of being so lucky just to catch a tiny bass to avoid a skunk to catching this one. The choice of going to the river was the wiser choice.
The flying mini bass(aka skunk breaker) Lucky catch
Just look at my braid line all over
the place.....I was so lucky to
get him out as also seen by the dazed
look on my face...ha ha A better pic of him
