Reality Check - Hodges 8/24

Have had a lot of really good days lately so I suppose it was time for a reality check. Took the drive up to Hodges hoping for some jiggy piggies since that’s my favorite place to drag a jig around.
It was a gorgeous day out. Water temp a balmy 82 and apparently the fish thought the buffet was closed this morning. I dragged, hopped, twitched, cranked, walked everything in the toolbox. Not a sniff. There were grebes and herons all around so there was bait but no bass activity happening at all.
I resigned myself to taking the skunk and started kicking back to the ramp around 1045. About halfway down the peninsula I started throwing a 6XD as I was kicking back just to cover water. At that point wind was picking up and kicking close to shore was the best way to get anywhere without fighting all of the current. I tossed the 6XD in a pocket of shade where there where some rocks, started my retrieve and lo and behold, the elusive fish. Fish was 12” on the nose. Saved from a skunk by the skin of my teeth. But a reminder that they aren’t always gonna be great days.

I was out there on a tube as well from 6:00-9:30 with only three bass for the day. All on a drop shot fluke dragged on the bottom as if fishing the bay for spotties. I launched out of Hernandez and fished that side of the peninsula. Water was chocolate milk and absolutely full of carp on the muddy beach.
It’s been tough fishing lately and the water level is down even more.

Yeah a weird day. I feel like even on the worst days I can get a couple fish to eat the jig but they were not having it today. I’ve taken one skunk since January and I was afraid today was gonna break that streak.

Sometimes you could throw the kitchen sink and more and bass just are not on the chew. It’s so frustrating to think why aren’t they biting these baits that they always bit before. I usually find myself putting a drop shot on and even gone down to a 4 inch worm in desperation just to be able to pull something in even if it is small as heck. I’m pretty darn sure your next fishing trip will be a darn good one to put the memory of this trip to rest. It’s always a highlight to go back and stick it to the bass. Go get’em buddy! Tight lines!

Better to get skunked throwing cool lures than catch some dragging senkos or some other cheesy rig.
Ive been getting some on old school cranks that ive had forever, so gratifying.
Im always happy working a jig or a spook, anywhere in the world, fresh or salt.

That’s funny because you told me bass were biting on 3 inch Robo worms in 47 feet of water when I was at Murray that day when you were there. And you also added that 99% of bass won’t be eating shad again until May or June of next year.
