No perch biters this morning at SMB, just nibblers. Very slow for first hour then got 2 solid hits. Lost one but got this one up on the sand . . 18".
Bite want dead after 7:30, swell & wind came up from SW.

Years ago i used mussel quit a bit, but haven't used it in years... I'll have to give it a try again.. I know it works, just a little messy and difficult to keep on the hook...

Butch, the mussel I use is mussel meat. It's de-shelled & cooked. Sounds odd, I know but it works. You can get it fresh at some of the Asian seafood markets or frozen. I get mine in a 2 lb box frozen & break off a bunch into 10-12 or so, into small freezer bags. The fresh works well if you salt them before using but not as economical. You get maybe 16-18 in a tray package for about $6. The 2 lb frozen box is around $10. Beats paying $20 for bloodworms !

Nick Heid of socal surfishing got me onto the mussel. He's a professional surf fishing guide and has a website you might want to check out. All kinds of info on gear, baits, etc.

P.S. My largest corbina last year, 24", was on mussel meat.

Thanks Bill... The mussel meat sounds like a great Idea... I wonder if clams (Cooked or fresh) from the Asian markets would work as well.. Have you tried them?.. I believe I've run across Nick's website before.. I'll tag it (My old computer died and I lost all of my saved sites)
Thanks again for the suggestion...

Butch, have not tried cooked clams yet. Might get a small batch to see if worthwhile. I've frozen a few raw clams & they work well while still semi frozen. Thawed out, difficult to keep on the hook, like raw mussel, unless tie on or use a small treble.
