First Fish

I grabbed my boat and made it to HB for my grandsons birthday. Ryan just turned 5 and I promised to take him fishing with his much older brother Caleb who's now 8. We traveled over to Newport Bay to try our luck so we launched in the back bay by Newport Dunes . As we left the ramp and it hadnt been more than 4 minutes I was passing out the rods when i discovered that bday boy had stepped on one of the rod tips and sheared it off. But we had others so i happily handed each child a rod rigged with a dropshot . A 3" berkely minnow was the winning ticket . We proceeded to hammer the spotties drifting in the back bay. There is something magical about a kids face when he is reeling in his first fish. then again the pride of his grandfather getting to take a picture of it. Both Ryan and his brother caught a slew of spotties and Grandpa well he never even got his line wet. The kids caught everything including each other , me and the boat. I was in continuous motion untangling lines taking fish off and putting bait on. It was great. I did manage to blow my motor but luckily i had my trolling motor with 3 batteries and limping back to the boat ramp. But still it was worth it to have such a memory

Nice Gramps.... Nothing a bigger pain or more rewarding than fishing with little ones... Ain't it great???

Reminds me of the old credit card commercial…

Broken rod, $100

Blown motor, $2500

Time with grandpa, catching a slew of fish, PRICELESS

Hard to beat that setup for numbers, I'm surprised no one caught a halibut.

side note:
careful with the regs, I believe most of the back bay is closed to boat based angling and only shore fishing is allowed east of the big bridge. always was frustrating not to be able to make a cast until getting to the main harbor.
