My PB halibut from the surf at just over 27"... I don't really fish these guys as I prefer corbina and SFC but have caught a ton of them as by-catch, but mostly non-legals... Only a couple of legals... You would be surprised how many you can catch with sand crabs, blood worms or ghost shrimp...Next fish on the same size bait and location... LOL...
I was fishing with 3 other friends, with mixed results... Nothing big with Kiyo's 16" corb being the biggest fish other than the flat guy..
Kiyo.. 1-corb, 1-BSP
Norm.. 3-corb, 3-YFC,6-9-BSP (The hot stick of the bunch, but he fished a little different area than the rest of us, until we got all together)
Jeff.. I didn't get final counts but he had a bunch of BSP last I saw of him...
Me... 1-'butt, 1-dink leo, and 8-10 -BSP ..
Fun fishing with the guys... We don't always all get together at the same time or same beach..

Wow, can't believe you got that hali on a sc. I've caught a lot of critters on crabs but never a hali. That had to have been a surprise. In any event, nice going & congrats. Out of curiosity, was it a soft shell, jumbo size or a 3 pack of micros on a larger hook ?
P.S Butch, I fished PB again yesterday and the beans were about 20 yards both to my left & right in the shallows. Presented countless sc's in front of them & to their rear(when they retreat) but could only manage a couple of taps & had one on but it let go. Next time I hope.

It was just a medium sized hard shell…. 1 cast out and I thought I hooked a rug, until it started for Catalina…. I was pretty sure it was a ‘butt, then I saw a vertical fin and thought it was a SNGF.. Glad I was wrong, the fish just flipped on its side… Heavy, but not near the fight that 25” corb put up.. I thought about those fillets, but wound up releasing it… For one I thing I didn’t want to quit fishing at 6:am.

… Glad you got out, and I know about those PB beans and their lock jaw… Get ‘em next time…

AWESOME catch!!! Ive caught them on gulp sand crabs. Rare for me though. I’d imagine that butt would have preferred that leopard over the crab. Perfect size

Yep... Especially since the sand crab came with a hook sticking out of it.

Thanks Verne... Crazy thing is I've caught quite a few on sand crabs... Probably more than anything else I've used, except maybe ghost shrimp... I don't cast LCs much anymore, but use a lot of sand crabs, blood worms and ghost shrimp and have caught 'butts on all of them.... Especially in Long Beach.. But this was in Huntington Beach..
