Hit the road at 6:30am and made the 1hr 20 minute trek from Oceanside to the most remote lake in San Diego County. Got my boat all dried up the night before but arrived to find out my cooler had tilted over and spilled all the melted ice into the boat
Spent 20 mins getting that all dried up and luckily passed the quagga inspection and got on the lake around 9am. Havenāt fished the lake in 10+ years so didnāt really know what to expect. Water temp was 63 in the morning and up to 68 degrees by the time we left. Started running some bank east of Pumphouse cove and got our first bite around 10:15 on a 6ā Magdraft freestyle and it was a good one! Chunky 6.5lber for my buddy Sam. Fish hit the swimbait flipped up shallow where a rock pile met some sticks, 3-5ft of water. We doubled down on the weedless swimbaits and ended up putting 2 more nice fish in the 2-4lb range in the boat. Lost another 5+lber when I stupidly tried to boat flip it on 14lb test and snapped off at the lure! Wasnāt going to make that mistake again and went to straight braid for the rest of the day.
Hit a little lull mid day and went looking for carp but didnāt find enough shallow to keep our interest so back to bass we went. Switched over to a flipping setup and started running some bank along the NW side of the lake. From 1-2pm we got on a heater and landed 7 more REALLY healthy bass. Everything we caught were scrappy 3.5-5lbers, topped off with my biggest bass in 2 years at just a hair over 7lbs! Green pumpkin/blue creature baits flipped shallow on the shady side of rocks with sticks around was the pattern. Again in that 3-5ft range. Super fun hour of fishing and we were pinching ourselves to have the whole lake to ourselves! We ground it out until 5:30 but never got on another good bite and only landed 1 more small bass. Ended up with 12 bass with our best 5 going well over 25lbs. Super fun day at the āFar Oneā!
