A buddy called and said he wanted to fish, and who am I to say no.

... When I got to the spot he already had a limit of humungous sand crabs... Probably too big, but full of eggs and some soft shells... We used those and I pealed some to make them more appetizing... Any way I picked up 6-7 BSP, and all but a couple were pretty decent size.. Not huge but respectable... And I'll post a few pics just for the "color"...

Right on Butch, I'd be stoked to catch a few perch these days

Percha-a-palooza! Nice going Butch. Those perch look like a lot of fun.
Regarding crab modification... Earlier this year, I found a couple of crabs that were just getting soft, but had not cracked their shell. I pocketed them for later and to my surprise about 30 min later they had pulled out of their shell and were perfect softies. We call them P&P... Pocket and Peel

. I've also cut large crabs with eggs in half and used the digger/egg side to catch SNGF, croaker and a few corbina. Once I tried a Bic lighter to turn the digger side of a hard shell w/o eggs orange. Results were not conclusive, but it was a creative idea.

The perch bite this year has been insane. The 9"+ variety put up a great fight if you set your drag low enough. Lots of headshakes.
