Lake Henshaw Bass + Carp on the Fly (video)

Post by risentidefishing »

Made the drive out to Henshaw yesterday to take advantage of the beautiful spring weather. Forecast for Warner Springs area said "A nice day for outdoor activities" so I had a feeling it was going to be good day! Arrived right when they opened at 8:00am and by the time I got my permits, pressure washed, and launched it was around 8:45am.

Plan was to try a little bass fishing early and then switch over to Carp on the Fly once things warmed up. Lake is in great condition with tons of flooded cover and a little better visibility then usual. Ran across the lake where I connected with a nice 3-4lb relatively quickly flipping a lizard up tight to the bank. Unfortunately I lost it when it wrapped me around a log but at least I confirmed the fish were up shallow an willing to play. Over the next hour I landed 4-5 more bass, all scrappy 1-2lb males up tight to the bank.

Once the sun had adequately warmed the water the carp became more active and were eating the black leech about as often as I could get it in front of them without spooking. I landed 6 fish from 6-12lbs and lost a few other bites. Also picked up 4 more bass in between sight fishing opportunities for carp. Beautiful day at a beautiful lake. And too make it even better I had the entire lake to myself! Already looking forward to my next trip out there.

What a great video. I enjoyed seeing the lake with water in it. Back in the day it was my go to lake for bass. Almost as good as Hodges. Thanks for sharing !!

Should only get better by the beginning of June! Maybe this will be the year the mythical hopper hatch makes its return

Seems like the bass population has rebounded a little after back to back years of higher water. Heard it used to be one of the best bass lakes in SD back in the day

Great vid. Have you considered getting a drone to record those eats? It would cool to see all your trips, including the bays, from up top.

I've got one but it's a lot of work when you're out solo. Once I start seeing carp I get tunnel vision haha

Great video! I could flip those 🌲s all day and be happy. Bass are looking very healthy. Henshaw used to the the premiere crappie lake. I wonder if the crappie have bounced back.

Nice work! Fun lake but the boat washing can be a drag. All for the best.
I have had some wide open spinner bait bites there 20-25 years ago.
Thanks for sharing!

Ditto on the above thoughts and kudos. I’ve been wondering when Henshaw might circle back to its former reputation!
