Lake Dixon Today

Post by sawheeler52 »

With a little boat surgery, got 2 today.
Missed one pickup.
All on drop-shotted pumpkin Kreatures.
Got a chance to cruise the shoreline for the first time this year.
No well defined beds yet; but some smaller males are hanging around shallow developing beds.
Today's catch was all in about 20' of water.
They don't seem to be shallow yet; at least how we approach them.
Before we were very far from dock on our way out, I stupidly hooked myself on a loose hook. Fully my bad.
The hook went through my finger with just the tip of the point coming out the other side of my finger.
Sure glad I had my cutting pliers and needle nose.
Cut off the hook eyelet, grabbed the slightly protruding hook tip with my needle nose and pulled it straight through and out.

Dixon is such a nice little lake. Congrats on some nice fish. I'm thinking to walk the bank this weekend. Gotta take advantage of the senior discount on parking. :)

DarkShadow,
Though I've certainly been to emergency rooms with crank baits embedded in my scalp, this was my first boat procedure.
Once I figured out how to get it out, I was good to go.
It hurt my son, as he cut the eyelet, more than me.
Not sure it would have gone so well if I didn't have a 2nd in the boat.
Tested the finger on guitar tonight. I'm all good. A flesh wound.
Thanks for asking,
Stephen

It happens sooner or later. My two most memorable. On in the Achilles tendon that I had to go to the er, another at the river which I had to push through and it was hitting the nerves. Both big swim bait hooks. Thumb was a heavy Quattro, that was rough

I've had my fair share, only 3 requiring urgent care visits. I've had a few fly fishing, but I yank those tiny flies out before my brain even has a chance to register what is happening.

The latest was the back trebles off a Rico popper. I had been teaching a newb how to fish topwater, and I kept stressing not to set the hook until they feel pressure. And of course, what happens? The Rico gets boiled on and before I even have a chance to turn my head, it's being fired straight for my leg. After assessing the damage, we just ended up cutting the other two hooks off and fishing until dark.

Nothing stops a good topwater bite.

I had to end up crimping his barbs on his topwaters from then out :-D

Fortunately, I have never hooked myself past the barb. I know people who swear by the following technique: . Works also to push the hook down against the flesh before pulling, the idea is for the barb to not cause damage on the way out.

Another good reason to always have sunglasses on when fishing.
