Weird. Does it actually work when the crank is turned?

Cool old reel does not look as if line twist was an issue . Some companies idea for a better mouse trap . No markings on the reel ? My guess is that you pushed the button during a cast as there is no bail mechanism .

The line comes off the spool like a spinning reel: No backlashes.
The line winds on the spool like a baitcaster: No line twist.
Obviously this is the ultimate reel, and it was shut down by Big Fishing. They want to control you!

Because the line comes off the spool differently than it goes on, there will be terrible line twist. It goes on the spool reverse of a spinning reel when the drag is being pulled out which twists the line. So when the line is being retrieved, it will impart an opposite twist of a spinning reel with the drag being pulled out. No wonder it didn't catch on.
Spinning reels do not normally twist the line if the line is properly loaded onto the reel and the line is not pulled out against the drag.
For those of you that still like the concept, a spin cast reel is a much better idea (awful as most of them are).

You must be using a swivel then. Or maybe they don't cause line twist for you because you never use them.
