It was also wild "morning full of life" here in the WindanSea area on 12/27. Acres of birds, terns, shearwaters, gulls, pelicans, cormorants and loons etc. Some schools of anchovies up in knee deep water it was reported by a friend. He hooked something good-sized but lost it when a pelican somehow got wrapped in his line. I was able to make a bunch of casts but the surf picked up and dropping tide washed the whole place out.

Just checked the Surfline Cams, and the birds are feeding heavy at Torrey Pines today. Swell is gonna be jumping all day today and maxxing out at 10-15 feet the next couple of days - beware of huge sets!
There are Free cameras with ads here:

As mentioned here before, a 28-inch screen plus a Surfline subscription gives you the edge on looking for birdspiles across the county, if you are into that sort of thing! :

I went out to the MB jetty and it happens to be closed due to the swell.

@blackcloud9 always delivering.
I wonder if it's aftermath of the orcas hunting dolphins.

Yes. For good reason. The waves are 15 to 20 feet outside the jetty and rolling across and OVER the outside breakwalls. I was there at sunset and watched the Legacy (whale watch boat) try to enter the closed out Mission Bay channel. They rode a few 10' waves, I shot video of their nightmare bay entry. Very scary for those passengers - the boat almost rolled over at one point. Working on getting that video off my phone.
Some photos of the madness in the channel (yes, inside Mission Bay):
Conditions should be similar tomorrow evening if you want to see a show. And again Saturday near sunset.
Caught limits+ of trout at Jennings this afternoon:

PS since I'm guessing that most of you don't have Instagram accounts, may have missed this epic shot from the Legacy's SECOND DECK. I think this shot is from the first time they got spun out near the end of the jetty. I have far-away video of that 80' boat clawing its way back out over some huge swells to deep water.

Could just be a lot of baitfish. In 2005 there were anchovies and sardines that were so thick I saw them all summer long from shore...saw them every time I fished from IB to Oceanside.
If the same thing was happening now it would explain the birds...and maybe the whole dolphin-orca thing.
