Snagging season is here. Come on man. If you shoot a black bear from a helicopter is that hunting or you grow an oat patch and when deer season opens you kill animals you been feeding all year. Poway and other clear water lakes that you so called fisherman like to haunt this time of year should ban ripping the big fish off of beds. I don't recognize your catch. I don't question anyones Character Knowledge or Skill Level but, this is not fishing and it concerns me that other fisherman on this site that put in the time on the water don't call it out.
Well I just did.

Hot take!
Aside from closing down coves completely like they used to? at Castaic back in the day, I don't see how you can enforce the ban of 'ripping the big fish off beds.'

Sam, I don't think I have met you in person, but I have met Chris. He is a very skilled fisherman, and an honorable man. While I personally don't bed fish, I don't disrespect guys that do so honorably, and I have no doubt Chris is one of them.
I guarantee he puts a lot of time on the water, and doesn't "haunt" clear water lakes exclusively bed fishing, as witnessed by those of us who attended the Barrett charity fishing event that he organized this past weekend.
To assume all bed fishing is snagging just reaffirms the old adage about making assumptions in my opinion. Stating an opinion without associated vitriol is fine, but it's sad to see this kind of caustic post on this forum which I find to be usually positive and helpful. But hey, you do you Sam.

Can't see why we would try to split hairs on ripping lips. You are going out and imbedding hooks into a fish's mouth no matter if they are being preyed upon by anglers in the means of hunger or instinct. Let focus on instinct; a bedding fish is biting out of instinct to protect it's bed and a reacting fish is bite out of reaction to something suddenly entering it's domain, or acting peculiar. In other words, reaction bite is a fish hitting something out of instinct before it has time to scrutinize the bait or settle in on what's happening. It's still a fish reacting out of instinct, same as bedding fish. A fish not acting out of complete instinct will scrutinize a bait. This is why live bait is so effective and why lure manufactures strive to make more realistic baits. Do you really think a spinnerbait looks like actual forage when given time to scrutinize. It's mostly a reaction bite. Why you get bit on a crankbait when it bounces of a rock or stickup. Reaction bite.
I don't see the difference. If you are hooking fish your are harming them, plain and simple. For those of us that are out there fishing, we all must be okay with harming fish (putting holes in their mouths). I am... I always want to protect the resource and show respect to all God's Creation, but I am honest enough to admit that hooking a fish, putting a fish in a livewell for hours, bouncing them into a boat, pulling them from deep water and fizzing, dragging them on shore, keeping them out of the water for photo opts and so on, is damaging the fish and putting stress on them.
There is for the most part a over population of fish in lakes due to so much catch and release. I want to see the big fish genepool protected. Chris released his fish fast and in good shape. Plus for every big female that gets pulled off a bed, there are many more that have not. For anyone bed fishing, fine keep it up. Just do your best as always to protect you catch. If you feel bad for the fish or think it's immoral, take the hooks off your baits.
There you have it. It's worth what you paid for it... $0.00 =D

I'd like that! You should post some catch reports so that I can recognize you as well.
