When I was a teenager, we used to take the bus to the beach and get on the 1/2 days and get yelled at by the captains for releasing legal sized Calicos, Sandies, etc.

It finally got to the point where 2 15 year olds had to tell the Captain that we'd keep track of the fish that we caught and released so it didn't affect his fish count, but more importantly, 'his livelihood' as he put it.

After anglers got their limits, deckhands would start filling up other bags that didn't have limits.

That was like, 1990. Glad things don't change. :-D

Pulling my conspiracy theory tinfoil hat down tight..here goes.

The MLPAs that were selected by a political (not scientific) process were designed specifically to shut down the areas closest to the harbors, in order to force the boats to travel father to get on some fish. The goal was to make half-day trips extinct, and hey, if it keeps private boats from fishing, mo' better. The survival of the fish species was just lip service. And like any good conspiracy theorist, I'd urge you to "do your research." ;-)

The difference between my outlandish claims and those put forth by flat earthers, cactus-huggers and moon-landing-was-faked folks is this: If you poke around online, you'll find news articles and op-ed supporting my seemingly kooky claim.

Here's my thesis statement: If the MLPA system as implemented was about protecting fish stocks, the survival of the sportboat industry wouldn't depend on fishing inside the bays.

It's very hard to sort the wheat from the chaff...and for an admittedly one-sided viewpoint, here's a place to start. https://asafishing.org/uploads/CA_Marin ... on_Act.pdf

But there's lots of money to be lost, and in a capitalistic society, green talks, and BS walks.

Why would individuals prevent money from being made?

Because fish have feelings, and fishing is cruel, and eating any animal is a crime against the universe.

Yeah, but where's the money to be made?

This country doesn't run on being nice.

Why would anyone want to pay so much to a bunch of rude deckies to catch vinas? So easy to catch from shore and you don't have to deal with kooks galore.
