San Diego Anglers Bay Bass Tournament (SD Bay) Sat April 6, 2024

Post by dwaynesda »

San Diego Anglers is hosting it's 24th Annual Open Bay Bass Tournament in San Diego Bay at Shelter Island. It will be different this year in a number of ways. It will be held at the Outboard Boating Club at the top of Shelter Island launch ramp and it will be a catch, measure and release tournament using an approved measuring device, which there are 3 of. , and your smart phone so you can take a photo of the fish you catch. The only fish that will be weighed are the jackpot halibut.

Two separate divisions. First prize in the Boat division is $1500 and First Prize in the kayak division is $750.

This years sponsors are Ocean Science International and Tow Boat US San Diego.

Now for a few details which we hope will answer your questions.

An app called ianglertournament.com is downloaded to your phone. Basically you catch your fish, MEASURE it on the weighboard with its mouth closed and the tail fanned out. Your team number is written on the back of your hand, snap the photo and hit "send". The app keeps track of all the fish everyone has sent in and then the winner is determined by who has the most "inches" of bass for their longest 5 fish. You let your fish go immediately after you send in the photo. No need to try and keep fish alive, no long lines at the weigh station and the best part, the tourney ends at 2 and you can weigh fish all the way up to 2 pm, then the app will shut down to any more entries. We will be waiting for you with a BBQ and when everyone is present, we will have compiled all the info from the app and award the prizes. There is no leader board to look at so nobody knows who is winning until we announce it. The other nice thing that the tourney director, Ken Pucillo this year, thought would be nice is that, because it is a catch and release tourney , 12" bass will be allowed to be entered. You know how many 12.5 inch sand bass you catch in the bay. And you could never use them in the tourney, well now you can. You catch Five -12.5 inch sandbass and you have over 60 inches of bass. It looks like it could be a lot of fun!

The kayak tournies has been using this format for quite awhile and it has been a huge success for them so we thought we would give it a go.

Cost is $200 per two man boat team ($150 if you are a San Diego Angler Club member) and $75 for the kayak division ($50 if you are a San Diego Angler club member).

You can sign up https://www.ianglertournament.com/or...........

If you need more info, contact Ken Pucillo at sdatournaments@gmail.com

We are hoping to do two of these every year, one in April and one in October.

And one more thing, there is a "practice app" you can use to check it out.

Interesting change, I've volunteered for the revival role before, so it's good to know there's a plan in place to keep the fish from dying that weren't intended to be kept rather than a penalty.
As for 12.5" sand bass, I wouldn't know anything about that.
