SD Bay 1/20
Original plan was to go throw small flies on the ultra light trout rod at schools of mullet. That changed after spending 1-2 hours and finding only 3 mullet up shallow that didnt want to play. Tossed on the ned rig with a really small fluke and the bite was on. It wasn't a numbers day but very good quality for back bay. Got out around 11 or noon when the rain started.
Rod: 5'6" phenix elixir
Reel: Kast King 500 size
Spotties: 10-14"
Halibut: 21-22"
Jack smelt: grande

You should have stayed for the rain. The bite just turned on when that happened. Had 5 fish in 6 casts when it started coming down.

i wasnt really prepped for it. The rain jacket isnt so waterproof anymore and the jeans certainly aren't. Still happy with the session though!

Super cool. That last spot looked like a lake! I have always been wary of going down there in my raft, didnβt want to get stuck. Seems deeper back there than I thought. What was the tide like when you went?

While Surf Fishing last month I had those damn Mullet chase an Roostertail Spinner all the way to my Rod tip. The water was plenty clear. Sometimes the whole school turned and followed it. None ate it. I do well in Newport Bay on tiny bits of Shrimp on an #14 black Salmon Egg Hook under a Bobber with only a foot of leader under the Bobber. It is important that the bait is above them. You can see their White Mouth when they inhale your bait. Set the hook lightly and hold on.

What don't you like about sight-fishing 15 lb fish that have evolved a specialized metabolic system that allows them to survive prolonged periods without oxygen, aka fight longer?mcquade outdoors wrote: βWed Jan 24, 2024 10:08 pmIm not sold on the carp yet, but its coming.Neuroshima wrote: βWed Jan 24, 2024 3:50 pmAnd carp, make it 4.mcquade outdoors wrote: βWed Jan 24, 2024 11:19 amits on the list actually wanted to ultra light bass/panish there so it'll be a 3 species day.
