War mouth sunfish

Post by FisherMax09 »

Are there any warmouths in San Diego? I'm looking to add it to my list. If there is, which lake would I find it at?

I've caught them in Escondido creek off Harmony grove rd and in the creek along Sabre springs pkwy. I used to catch them back in the day at Poway lake when the water was low, they like to hide in the rocks with bluegill.

They used to be abundant at Morena. Haven’t fished with anything that would catch them for 30 years up there.

Lots of war mouths in the Middle East these days but those are not fish (maybe suckers though).

They may not be exactly the same but they sure do act the same so I will be wrong when I say it but hey, it could be a hybrid now.

I have heard that they are very similar but warmout are more peaceful than green sunfish. With a little it of research its pretty easy to tell them apart tho.

That makes sense. I just always heard since a kid at Morena, people refer to them as warmouth or rock bass. They used to be thick up there. Definitely green sunfish

I have caught green sunfish all over the county, over the years, but I have only ever caught or seen seen anything that resembles a rock bass or warmouth at Lake Morena.

That's where I caught them before too along with bass up to 5lbs. This was before the housing development and horse corral was built but I'm sure they're still there because I saw some little bass under the bridge to Olivenhain lake a few years back

I caught several oddly-colored fish out of the San Diego River a couple decades ago; only saw them in one particular area. Their mouths were bigger than a bluegill's....rounded pectoral fins like a greenie...but the only color on them was brown...even their eyes. Yeah, I know. Pics or it didn't happen.

Naw, blackcloud. Their bodies were more like bluegill than greenies....and they had short rounded pectoral fins like a a green sunfish, not the longer, pointed fins like bluegill or tilapia.
It was in the pool where where I crossed that one time, and found a kingsnake eating a ratter..does that help?
