Thursday on the V...

I mixed it up a little this week, instead of my normal Monday trip, I hit San V on a Thursday. I grew up fishing the V on Thursdays, so it was kind of like old school days. I got there at sunrise and set out looking for busters! It looked grim after I checked my first 3 or 4 normal areas, but my last spot showed some promise! I found a small school of breaking fish, which I pulled 4 fish out of throwing my finesse baits. Once those fish disappeared, I switched over to my dropshot and worked the shore out to 25' and pretty much came up with nothing! My heart was pretty much stuck on fishing breakers this time of year, so I set back out on finding some. I have a spot that normally turns on when others die off and it was working today! Even with the bluebird skies, the fish kept coming up, but you had to have patience (sorry Vinny). Between 10:00 and 12:00, I boated 10 more busters, mostly smaller schooling fish..missed several others

. The bait they are chasing is really small, so be prepared to downsize. Everyone was complaining about the fish being finicky, but you just need to match the hatch and throw what they're looking for! It's definitely not a wide open bite and if you're new to chasing busters, you're probably going to be frustrated! Maybe we'll finally have a good November again!

Anyway...Nice job out there even on a Thursday and not your typical Monday. Glad you were able to find some busters.
The bass this time of year are filling themselves up for the colder months when they will be suspended and moody down in deep water.

I normally throw 3' past the busters, yesterday they wanted it on their heads! It's tough to do with a weightless bait, with a side breeze, to a moving target...guess that's why we love chasing them!

That’s the same set up I use. I will downsize to 6lb a lot of times since there isn’t really anywhere for them to go once hooked.

Question on the setup McFish and others…my braid to fluoro (50 to 10) is hard to throw smaller baits as the braid seems to dig in to itself on the spool and I really have to wing it to get 80% of a mono cast. I assume you are using a spinning reel. Any thoughts on this? Use lighter braid? Respool the braid looser?

Lol VB…my guess is he’s already caught more bass today than I will! I did figure the spinning reel part but wanted to confirm. I just can’t seem to keep the line-dig from shortening my braid/fluoro casting distance. And I love how a light bite is telegraphed with that setup!

I don't really have that problem with my 20lb Powerpro braid. The only time I notice it some what is after catching larger fish, but then on the next cast I just pull out some line at the end of the cast and it's all fixed. The line really shouldn't dig into itself when reeling in these tiny weightless baits. I'm using a 20 yr old Shimano Sedona, so I don't think that's the answer! Good luck..go get em!
