Eastern Sierra whitewater report
Many campground closed due to swampy conditions.
My jam is flicking spinners in little creeks. High, fast water limits presentation in most spots. Gonna hit parts of the San Joaquin tomorrow. Gonna have to be past the summit by 7 am to avoid the shuttle. The road to the postpile is open but the campgrounds are not.Word on the street is they are hoping to open Friday
I may venture down to the lower Owens Friday. Develop plans d thru f in case of another year of heavy runoff.
Got a micro rainbow and brown outta Sherwin creek. Places in town were a lot busier than I expected midweek.

Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report
All caught on the new spinners...dubbed the Patient Zero. The trout catching epidemic starts now...
(Selling the sizzle)
In other news, I made a plywood shelf with hinged legs to make it easier to get stuff in and out of the bear box at my campsite. The cooler and kitchen bin (containing pots pans propane cannisters) go below. Other stuff (food, lantern and stove cases, toiletries) go on top. If you just want a soda from the cooler, slide it out and grab a can.... You don't have to deal with a bunch of crap that usually gets stacked on top of the cooler.

Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report
On the way home, I stopped at Baker Creek Campground outside of Big Pine.
Got two little brownies out of the various creek branches. The campground is very nice, and has two ponds that probably get stocked.
I made a couple casts into a pond...snagged a broken line that had a foot-long stocker hooked up. Cut the line and let it go...no telling how long it had been dragging around that line.
There was a guy there who saw me land one of the browns.
"How do the fish get here?"
"They live here."
"But how do they get here?"
"Somebody stocked the creek a hundred years ago. The fish lay eggs, the eggs hatch, and they grow up. Even if this part of the creek ran dry, there would be fish upstream that would repopulate the creek."
"But how would they get down here?"
"Swim, I guess. Have a good one."

Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report
So on the way home, spotted a medium-sized herd of elk in the wildlife viewing area. This is where the pastures are watered all summer to grow grass, and the elk come down to hang out an fatten up for the winter.
This group of about two dozen included one bull, who only had one antler. They were quite a distance away, straight downwind, and could smell me. Between the gusty wind blowing the tripod around, and the elk in constant movement, and the bull hiding behind the girls approximately 700 yards away....the photos sucked.

Next question would have been: "But how do they keep from drowning?".Carpkiller wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 4:01 pm On the way home, I stopped at Baker Creek Campground outside of Big Pine.

Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report
I'm more interested in how they flew across the Atlantic.
Brown trout's final form has wings apparently.
