Shelter Island dock damage...

Post by Carpkiller »

So a short story in the paper today says one of the docks has been damaged so it's gonna be slow at the ramp for a while.

I don't do boats...but just curious...did one of you mugs drive your boat into the dock? Or know what happened?

No, damage was not from boats. Good ole mother nature.

Sand has built up in that corner of the basin, actually quite a bit. It has left a very uneven bottom right there. At really low tides, the docks come down on that uneven sand and get al twisted up and are starting to buckle and crumble at the one junction. The sand will have to be sucked out and new dock sections inserted. This could take a long time considering how fast govt works.

So. The folks who rebuilt the launch ramp area somehow came up with a design to capture sand and pile it up where it could do the most damage.

I hope the resulting lawsuit sets aside money for regular dredging.
