OC Report 8-20-26

Post by DaDTaughtMe2Fish »

Started mid day at Huntington cliffs, beach looked good, fishing didn't pan out.
Drove down to Newport pier, 19th street, no good structure to focus on, so went out on pier asking around and watching the conditions. There was no bait around the pier, "NO" birds working as for as I could see. Water clarity was great.
Went down to Corona Del Mar and found a ton of salad.
Gave up for the day.

On the positive side I easily found parking at all 3 spots, for no cost even.
Take the win when you can.

On a side note was just looking at beachs by Lompoc on google, look at the satelite pictures of Surf Beach. Some of the best looking structure for miles. Huge troughs and sandbars, the surf is very dangerous there so have to be very careful.
Has anyone fished there?

At least you gave it a try.. Those are some of my usual fishing spots, but not as much this year... I've never fished the Lompoc beaches, but used to camp and fish Jalama for some huge perch... Loved that spot, but not it's winds...

Camping at Jalama early October so looking forward seeing big BSP.
Will pray for lack of wind at that time.

That's interesting. As of 2 weeks ago, the bonita were all over those piers, and now, goneski.

Gone up north for cooler waters it seems.

Jalama beach was great BSP fishing on 10-5, plenty of sand crabs all over, most small but with effort, found good size. Did not find any with eggs though. Quite a lot of salad, but just small casts of 20ft was clear of it and the small ones were hungry.
Morning had offshore winds, so wind was not a problem.
Don makes a great Jalama burger, Thanks for the advice butch.
Will be going back there again, maybe even this month, love the place.

Glad you had a good time, caught fish and had the burger.. I would like to give those cottages a try… The didn’t exist the last time I was there… I’ve got some absolute pig perch there in ā€œ The good old daysā€.. Also, I forgot that the prevailing wind is mostly blowing off shore, so doesn’t effect fishing much except for longer cast and sand blasted legs…

I think Surf Beach is closed for fishing because it's now in Vandenberg State Marine reserve. I was born and raised in Buellton, well, born in Solvang and raised in the entire Santa Ynez Valley lol. Lots of great memories from those beaches and I took my girlfriend to have her first Jalama burger earlier this year!
