Looking for advice for Mammoth in October.

Hi everyone, I’ll be going up to Mammoth for the very first time the first week of October and I’m open to any and all advice at getting the best shot at landing some fish. I do t plan on keeping any so I’ll be using barbless hooks on all my spoons and minijigs. I plan on bringing my float tube and will be using ultralight spinning gear. I’ll be staying at the Limelight hotel which is only 3.5-5miles from Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, and a few others I can’t remember right now. From what I’ve read so far Lake Mary seems to be the best. Are the fish deeper or close to shore this time of year? Any consistent depths that you guys like to target ? I’m not opposed to using bait either. Thanks in advance!

Check to see what the trout stocking schedule is/was. Otherwise most of those lakes the trout will be on the surface at daybreak and I do pretty good at pretty much every lake North of Crowley with gold & red thomas buoyants.

Twin lakes is pretty shallow in most parts of it but have done pretty well from shore if you bring waders and walk in where the waterfall (comes from Mamie, twin falls) is and fish with a crappie jig, power worm, or night crawler on a bobber with a long leader (looks like it's called Kutzadika lake now?)

Otherwise the majority of the other lakes around there you can tube and do pretty well as long as you're on the water at the butt crack of dawn. I have tubed all those lakes but don't have any input on Horseshoe, never fished it since at the time they hadn't stocked in a long a while for some reason or another

Thank you sir! I’ll be sure to bring a red and gold Thomas Bouyant. I didn’t even know they have stock schedules, so I’ll be sure to look for that.

In case it''s not posted online usually the lake tackle shop will have a trout stock schedule if not the camp host will have or refer you to someone that has the info. Forgot to mention you can launch your tube where they have the rental boats shored at Twin Lakes. I haven"t been there in a while but usually the grass growth is a problem this late in the summer and can take a while to maneuver through in a tube to find the deeper water

If you like creek fishing, there's an easy-to-access section that holds lots of stocked rainbows and browns. Look for the Tuff Campground online; it's basically across the highway from Tom's Place. It only takes about ten minutes to get in, check it out, and you're back on the road if it's not your thing. Park in the day use area at the camp entrance and you can eyeball it and see if it looks like your kind of thing. Trout teasers, spoons, spinners...the usual suspects. There's an easy trail along the creek..but wear long pants in case you want to squeeze into the brush to access a likely spot.
I have been camping there the last few summers, and driving to day-hike and fish all over the Mammoth Area.

Thank you sir, I’ll be sure to look up those spots. I’ll probably have my 7 year old boy with me so shore spots with easy access are ideal.

Okay...for a 7 year old...there are some really easy-to-fish spots at the far end of the campground. A lot of the stocked rainbows end up down by campsites 29 thru 30...you can cast a nightcrawler and a split shot and get 'em.
It's a bit of a hike down from the day use parking...If your kid's up for it, walk down the campground road and start fishing there and fish your way upstream to your car...

We used to walk shore at Owens River and do well for trout. Panther Martens, Blue Fox and Small Rapalas. We haven't been in years.

I got back a week ago from 4 days in Mammoth. Wife & I stayed at the cabins at Twin Lakes so did most of our fishing there. Water level was low and lots of grass to contend with as noted by @professionull & others. Did manage a 13" brown on a crawler but otherwise the action was very slow with a few small stockers here and there; water still too warm. Talked to a tuber who fished the very small lake below the inlet from Mamie & the road at Upper Twin that goes to the campgrounds on the other side. Said if you got out 50 yards or so from shore, there were clear spots & fishing was real good, for whatever that's worth. Did one session at Mary which was a bust this early but been real good in October. in past years. Mamie would be worth giving a go as well. Didn't get to George or Convict this time up, you might consider. Good luck !
