I have had days at Barrett when a soft plastic cast within 1 foot of the bank got bit but the same lure would be ignored 3' from the bank, even in the middle of the day. And I have even had bass leave the water to get a lure cast close to the bank. Sometimes, I would cast a lure onto the bank and hop it into the water, that works too.

Frogs will often jump from the bank into the water close to the bank. And a shad that ventures close to shore is easy for a bass to nail since it has fewer escape routes.

It's often more important where you put the lure than what the lure actually is.

That's great! Yesterday, my mini crankbait got hung up on a low hanging branch, never hit the water, about a foot above it. The pendulum motion of it coming to rest drove a bass (or sunfish happened so quick, didn't get an ID) crazy, it slammed the surface of the water violently. Never did get another strike in that spot, cuz I went over to that bank to cut my crankbait free and spooked whatever the fish was. I should have cut my line and cast a 2nd crank first!

I guess that technique is called backspinning, rather than flipping.

My buddy and I were on a good Jig bite at Barrett a few years back where they were eating it off the bank. Pitched a cast up onto the bank and as I hopped the Jig off the bank into the water a Bass ate it before it even hit the bottom. My buddy and I just started laughing. Haha

Had a similar experience at lake Havasu once, saw a bass in inches of water, cast on the shore to not spook it and that bass jumped on the shore to grab the worm! Most amazing experience! Buddies even witnessed it and hooked them into fishing instantly

So, once when I was at Barrett about 30 years ago when there were tules around the lake, I was in a boat with friends when one of them cast his worm into the tules and got hung up about a foot above the water. He was an easily frustrated kind of guy and started cussing like crazy when he couldn't shake the worm loose. All of a sudden, a 3 lb. bass charges it, comes all the way out of the water and gets hooked. His mood immediately changed to delight and he landed the fish.

The same day, another passenger cast a frog into the tules and caught.....a frog! The live frog was much bigger than the fake frog, keeper sized in fact.

There's a reason birds perch as far up the tules as possible.
