7/6- Miramar

Post by VinnyBass »

Quick morning trip up to Miramar.
Tossed a 6" WCZ Battles shad for a bit and had small bass follow it and a couple about a pound banged the tail which was interesting to watch. No surface action at all so just tossed plastic worms shallow and deep and missed 3 and landed 9 small bass. I thought I would catch a lot more as I landed 4 really quickly, but it wasn't in the cards this morning as I worked hard just to land the other 5 bass. The purified water they are putting into Miramar it is doing a number on any baitfish as last year there was hardly any type of surface action and even locals that fish there often confirmed that with me which is a bummer. Thank goodness for plastic worms for now. :-)

Shall bass samples:

Biggest bass of the morning...maybe 2.5?

Good job on getting some fishies....the City is doing it's best to eliminate bass fishing in the County! Get em while you can!

Nice work, as always! I was there on 7/1 for a quick session from first light until about 10 and managed 10 bass. The quality was pretty decent compared to my previous day there too. Seemed like they were still hanging out in the transition zones and the grass. Still, I wish there were some wolf packs to throw topwater to, but it’s looking pretty lifeless on the surface.

Yes this trip was just small ones even though I picked up a few nicer ones on my last 2 trips. I usually fish the deeper grass with
plastics but did pick up a couple small ones flippin the tulles. Overall I have found that some of my healthier fish over the years have
come out in deeper water. A few years back, there were wolf packs and if you did not get them on top, I got many using a damiki
blade, small jerk baits and spoons a little deeper. There was schools of baitfish back then and schools of bass chasing them. Last year
everything changed and the best bet was plastic worms etc. With less and less baitfish, it sounds like a lot of skinny bass down
the road and no going back to the fun topwater in the past.

The glory days was when the City of San Diego managed the lakes and they had money and there used to be lots of troutplants (which was a great diet to help make giant bass). The county lakes like Dixon, Poway, Jennings and Wohlford for example have plenty of trout plants during the winter and best bets for catching a giant bass is more likely at one of those lakes. Anyway...the past is the past and we are really in a sad situation with the lack of water causing so many boat ramps out of commission on so many lakes.

I dont see many posts about Lake Skinner.
But, it's a very good fishery, whith many different species to target.
It's launch ramp is open for private boaters & also has good shore access for bank fishing.
It's a longer drive from SD, but it's a good option for boaters.
Camping is also available at the lake.
Good place for a camping staycation.
Kid & pet friendly.
