My old stomping grounds.....
I try to hit up Murray at least a couple times a year, just for old times sake! I grew up a few blocks from there in the 60s and it's where I learned bass fishing! Back then there was only a couple of us fishing for bass there, so I was pretty much self taught! Actually, I think I go back there just to hear the latest bass tricks from my buddy Vinnybass....always a wealth of knowledge! The lake is pretty much the same as it was in the 60s, but with the addition of some underwater structure, and alot more tulles, it's changed where the bigger fish tend to hang out. The lake can be tough to fish , basically a bathtub with isolated structure and the flipping bite can be nonexistent when the water level is dropped...which is now a common occurrence in San Diego unfortunately! I feel the future of Murray is not bright, with the closure of so many ramps at other lakes, Murray is already feeling the pressure! On some days, the number of boats has already doubled and tripled, putting lots of pressure on the few key spots on the lake. Almost forgot...my fish report! I ended the day with 11 fish, lost 5...started the day blind casting tiny flukes, with no topwater to throw at. I ended up with 4 fish doing that, but lost 4 with my finesse size hooks. That bite disappeared by 8 and I switched over to throwing a downsized Carolina rig with a 3' leader and a 4" or 6" Robos. I love to talk bait size with Vinny...he throws big stuff, I throw little stuff...somehow we both get fish! There's lots of small fish in the lake now, so that might give me an advantage in fish numbers...but he normally takes big fish honors!

Re: My old stomping grounds.....
Was not a few blocks from Murray, but grew up about 2 miles from there in the 60's and then bought a house in 1985 just over a mile closer to Murray. One thing I know is that you are no stranger to the lake, despite living far from it and always are able to catch bass any time of the year you come down to fish it. The lake can be tough for many who have fished it and at times very tough recently with all the added boat pressure that is due to ramp closures at other lakes. I can't say I am amazed that you always catch bass because you have done it so often in my presence. I do admire that you can fish ways to make some small baits work so effectively over and over again. I often used to kid you about you using a 4" roboworm and then even biting the head off to make it a smaller bait, but you still are still able to catch a heck of a lot of bass doing so. Anyway, glad you had a fun time and thanks for posting. Tight lines always.
ps. Don't hold your breath on me returning anytime soon to the lake of D & K after you out fished the s*** out of
me on my last visit.

No problem I know your memory is slipping a little. Speaking of memory…. I remember all the times me and my friends would hit McDonald’s years ago and you would always give us extra fries for free until you became the manager. You sure changed and a couple guys made up a nickname for you…….Mcfish wrote: Sat May 16, 2026 7:49 amMy mistake....I was thinking you were on the Editorial Board at the Pennysaver......lollllllll......
