Canyon Lake 11/28
Hit Canyon for what seems to be my Monthly Float Tube Session with my buddy Hoppy. It was the most beautiful idyllic windless sunny warm day! I finally had to wear Waders as the water temperature had dropped into the cold territory. While this usually affects most Lakes by diminishing catches, I was hopeful that Canyon would be good to me like last year. We got in the water at 1:30 pm, thinking the water would warm up a little before we started. It was not to be. This trip we fished the “Jump Lagoon”, a smaller body of water off the main Lake. The last time I fished it, I discovered a high spot where I caught several larger model Bass. I was eager to start there but it didn’t produce a bite this time. I threw my standard assortment of jigs onto that 8-12 foot deep area surrounded by deeper water. I switched to a Wacky rigged Tiki Worm (think Senko) and Flipped the numerous outside Tree Trunks and deeper Reeds for not a take. Switching to a 3/16 Jighead and a Mud Minnow 5 inch ZMan Streakz, I fished a gravelly sandy Slope, several nice Drop offs, and an often productive ledge for not a bite. Next I trolled down the middle of the pond in 15 to 25 feet of water, staying on contact with the bottom and finally set the hook on a heavy wet rag. I stopped reeling and felt the familiar tail beat of a Bass, which then began to surface quickly. Then gone. Damn! I stayed in that area for a half hour and nothing came of it. By now the Sun was dropping behind the hills and the air temp dropped considerably. On the way back to the get out spot there is a Sandy rocky beach area with lone rocks scattered about the bottom in 12 feet of water. A small concrete launch ramp is there on private property. Over the years it has often produced Bass for me during the Cold months. Always after the Sun sets. First cast up towards the ramp was met with some resistance and a hook set on another wet rag. It came out of about 10 feet of water and then turned into a 2 pound Bass with a fat belly. I yelled out to Hoppy across the Lake, just so he would know that catching a Bass was possible in this place. He stuck with flipping the Reeds in one of his favorite spots. I hit that area where I caught my fish from different angles for a couple of minutes and Bam! an aggressive hit and the feeling of a a bigger Bass, running to the right and coming to the surface for a nice splashy jump. I carefully worked that Fish up to the Tube. It was a Clone of the first Bass with four times the fight. Go figure. So I had two Bass and Hoppy had none. The last little fishy area is a set of jetty rocks against the bank in front of a large Mansion on the water. These rocks bake in the Sun all day, they are about as close to a sure thing that exists in this place but I stayed deep and let Hoppy in there so he could have a good chance at getting a Bass. He didn’t disappoint. I grinned as i watched his rod start to bend and he set the hook on a berserk Bass that fought pretty good. It turned out to be an exact Clone of mine. Our total was three Bass that were exactly the same. We both dodged the Skunk. Still, not a lot of action on this trip. Can’t wait for December, and my next chance at this place.
