Agua Hedionda Lagoon Filled With Vegetation

Post by bdb74 »

I went to Agua Hedionda Lagoon and maybe 20% of my casts did not come back with seaweed or seagrass covering the rig. Same thing last night. No bites. I saw a few opaleye and one 10-12" bass caught. All on bait. Some people casting lures left after a few casts when they realized it was useless.

Does anyone know why the lagoon is filled with so much vegetation? Is it the time of year or recent storms? I was fishing the area closest to the sea.

I don’t have an answer to your question but either bay will get you a lot better odds. The best action I’ve seen at the lagoon is on the east side of the bridge.

I was fishing Mission Bay this morning in my canoe. Lot grass and Debris floating around. Plastic bottles , firewood. I think it was because we had a full moon and the tides were high picking up everything on the shore.

You don't say what lure you are using. The most grass proof lure for me has been either a wobble head jig or a Slider jighead paired with a curly tail grub or paddle tail bait. Then put a swivel, snap or split ring about 12-18" above the lure as a grass catcher. Most of the grass is suspended so the grass catcher will help a lot. Grass catcher above a weedless drop shot will work too. With shorter days, we are seeing some grass die off; it will get even worse in the winter.

3-5 Days leading up to full moons create big tidal current swings which pull the grass off the bottom. With the water being warm coming off the summer temps there is going to be a lot of growth but you should notice less salad on your lures per the next full moon

I almost always use a Carolina rig with a curly tail grub and occasionally a paddle tail grub. Today in the surf I switched the rig to a Carolina sinker-bead-swivel setup with the hook Texas style. It rarely got fouled by any weeds so I think I will switch to that rig in the lagoon.
