Hodges and out past Ramona kayaking

Post by blackcloud9 »

I have not posted much but have been kayak fishing crappie between shore bay halibut trips and pond bass on weather days.

Lake Hodges 2/16 and 2/22. A few crappie and a couple nice bass both trips, some crappie released. Using various crappie jigs "out in the middle". Water temp 58 early and 62 later.

Sutherland 3/8. A few nice bass (released) and a dozen crappie, some released. Using various crappie jigs "out in the middle" toward the dam. Crappie at 6 -13 feet. Bass hitting crappie jigs at 20 -25' but easier to target with heavier dropshot rigs. Water Temp 57.

What is the launch like at Hodges? Can you get close to the water?

Pretty easy with a float tube or a kayak with wheels, you need to wheel kayaks or boats down the gravel from the parking lot. This photo is taken from the bottom of the ramp/parking lot, the water is probably 5 - 6 feet higher now.

Are the crappie out in the middle of the lake still or have they moved in to the sticks close to the bank?

They would be along shorelines by now. Usually by late March they are in spawn mode. Bobber/jig anywhere shallow.
