I launched from Dana Landing at around 8:30 and the tide was high. I landed a couple of small spotties among the anchored boats, when Fish and Game pulled up asking to see my license which I promptly produced. I was certain it was due to expire on 3/2. Well on inspection it had expired on 2/3. Fortunately the guy gave me a break, and I promptly kicked to the ramp, got out, and bought a new license and Ocean Enhancement stamp at the Dana Landing store.
Now, back on the water, I kicked out of the launch area through the moored boats, and headed west out under the overpass toward the mouth of the Bay. This proved to be a mistake as the tide turned, and was rushing out quite aggressively. I had the Bixpy motor at it's highest speed and kicking frantically, and was still barely making headway trying to head back in.
It was then that a mini disaster struck. One of my straps broke, and I watched helplessly as my fin and shoe washed rapidly out to sea. Now, left with just a left fin and motor, I had quite a challenge ahead. Even with a motor fins are essential for not just thrust, but effective navigation as well....uugh. Fortunately, I was able to make my way closer to the rocky bank where the water was shallower and the outgoing current was a bit less strong. Unfortunately, there is a lot more eel grass along the rocks as well, so I was quite concerned about that fouling my only effective way of moving forward sans both fins.
Well it took me nearly an hour to finally get back that 1/4 mile or so to the protected landing area, and I was stressed and relieved at the same time. I mean I had my cell phone with me, and could have called for help had I really needed to, but fortunately that didn't become necessary.
Anyway, I ordered some new fins with a step in design, that will hopefully be a bit more secure. Still, I think I will stick to lakes for a few weeks.....whew.
