85° and all is well

Post by otaymichael »

Chuck (@619bassin) and I hit lake Baccarac in Mexico for the last few days. We had fished the lake together four years ago and had a blast back then.

Left San Diego via Tijuana to Los Mochis Sunday morning, a 1.5 hour flight and a 2.5 hour van ride, arriving there late Sunday afternoon. Grabbed a sandwich at the lodge and then hit the lake for some topwater shore fishing action. I got seven right off the bat, couple of jerkbait fish, and the others on the popper. Nothing big, 2's, but a lot of fun. Chuck got a few too. Next day we got up at oh dark hundred, had breakfast and off to try our luck on top. That didn’t pan out and we went to med diver crank baits. Chuck got his to work to pretty well and so did I. Got back for lunch around noon and back on the water at one. We hit an area further back and got on them really well. Fours were the average now, fives, and sixes and I believe a seven. Mine on Carolina Rigs and swim jigs Chuck. Hit the dam on the way in and added a few more to our numbers. We fished till dark again.

Next day, we hit the dam to start with and did OK there, but things slowed down at our honey holes from the day earlier later on. That’s fishing. Found out it was tough for everyone that day. Ended at the dam and did OK.

Third and final day started at the dam again it did real well again. I threw some really big top , Lanker punker, and got a giant blowup which is always fun. In fact, half the time I threw topwater, swinging for the fences, what's new? Chuck did real well on his popper also. His biggest, from day one, was a 8.7, so my goal was to beat that and I got close finally with an 8.6 on the last day, on a jig. Also Chuck lost one over 10 on a deep diver day three. Overall, we averaged 20 to 25 fish each per day, although day two didn’t produce anything of size.

Funny thing was our guide, Alex, would once in a while pick up my rod for fun, usually catching something in short order in just a cast to two. For the most part he didn’t fish, but towards the end of day three he switched out my deep diver rod I was throwing, noticing I was getting pooped out after 15 casts (equivalent to fighting a 5 pound bass each cast). He tossed one cast to the same place I’d just cast 15 times to and caught a monster!! But it got off at the boat and he proceeded to scream how he just lost a giant. I turned and looked down and noticed his line was still going out and said so. It’d been bit by another bass, and when it jumped, we saw it was another lunker. After making sure it was on he says I should reel it in and kept insisting I take the rod which I refused to do. I said I don’t need to reel it in I’ve reeled in millions of fish, and besides, you caught it so you you go ahead, it’s your fish. But he insisted so I reeled it in and it ended up being a 10.2. High-fives all around, which was not uncommon for us. We hit the dam and fished till dark on last time, getting a couple more including two on the lunker punker and a GIANT explosion on it. Alex was so incredulous that I would throw something so big and was so happy to see the explosions I got on it. I did get two smaller fish (two pounders) that actually nailed it and stuck.

It was a great time and we slept in a little the next day, yesterday, as we were dead tired and didn’t have to get going till 8 AM back to the airport in Los Mochis.

Great post! Love those fat pale ones =)
That's my kind of lake, low amount cover, emphasizing the structure targeting.
Keep up the good life!
