Keeping large channel cats

Post by Kenroe »

For those if you who fish for cats regularly, are you keeping a 40+lb channel cat, regardless of the impoundment where you catch it ?

A 40lb channel cat fish would be an extremely rare catch. A 40lb catfish would more likely be a blue catfish or a flathead catfish.

A catfish that big in these lakes would be a blue. A catfish that big would also taste not very good either compared to the 1-5lb range. I see no reason to keep it unless you want it mounted.

The rare times I go catfishing I intend to take home my limit and I'd never keep an 8lb+ catfish of any kind. 2-5lb ones are plentiful, provide the best meat and provide enough to feed a great fresh meal to any reasonable amount of people.
