1st Trip Of The Year

Grandson called and asked if I'd like to fish with him and his girlfriend.. Sure... So we made plans to fish Alamitos Peninsula with some lug worms... We tried the bay side 1st for no bites.. Very clear water, but no sign of bait or anything else... Then we jumped over to the ocean side and it was pretty slow fishing there too... We did get bit on the extreme outside of our casting range... My Grandson was 1st on board with a small corbina... I was second, and my 1st fish of my year, with a huge jack smelt... I really don't care for them much, but I'm known for getting them ... The Grandson's girlfriend came in with the fish of the day... A 15"-16" corbina... Not large but the best... She's a surf fishing newbie, so really happy for her... I got another small corbina to finish the day... Wind started really blowing so we left.... I love fishing with my Grandson and his girlfriend is fun to be around, so it was a great day...

Congrats on your first catch of the year. I got no luck for the past couple of weeks, casting metal jigs and plastics. Did you guys catch those corbinas and jack smelts with bait or lures? I still don't see any sandcrabs at all here in San Diego..... It's been hard since like November last year, maybe all the fishes are out far in the ocean and not really coming close to the surf, since there are no baits. Can't wait for the fishing season to start!

Congrats on your first catch of the year. I got no luck for the past couple of weeks, casting metal jigs and plastics. Did you guys catch those corbinas and jack smelts with bait or lures? I still don't see any sandcrabs at all here in San Diego..... It's been hard since like November last year, maybe all the fishes are out far in the ocean and not really coming close to the surf, since there are no baits. Can't wait for the fishing season to start!

Sand crabs won't show up on the open beaches until water temps are consistently above 60 F. You might try under the PB pier, they seem to show up there early and stay until late in the season. They were there into November last year but gone by month end. Good luck !

Thanks Mike.. We don't fish as much as we used to, but I guess they grow up and get a "life" ... We were fishing buddies for a lot of years... He is a great young man, and I'm very proud of him.. His GF is a sweetheart too....

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it! I’ll definitely check out under the PB pier; that’s interesting to know they seem to stick around there longer. Maybe it’s a bit warmer under the pier, which could explain why they stay later in the season.

Last week I finally caught a first fish of the year—a walleye perch on a swimbait. Super stoked to break the dry spell. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge
