Yak vs Power

Post by CaptJoel »

I didn't want to bog down the "What Yak are you fishing?" thread with this question. Given the cost, size, and weight of some of these craft, what are the advantages over a small power boat? I'm not takling centerconsole but rather 12-14ft aluminium with a tiller 9.9-20hp motor. Easy launch, low maintenance and better range. Other than the quiet intimacy of a kayak what else am I missing in their appeal? I am looking to upgrade from my float tube and keep finding myself drawn into the small boat world vice yaks.

I have a paddle kayak with a bixpy motor on it. The whole thing weighs about 80 pounds. I'm able to put it on top of my car, and easily store it under some shelves in the garage.

Not having to have a trailer and space to park it are some major pros over a boat.

Some other pros:
-Electric motor is super quiet
-Not having to breathe fumes from burning fuel
-Can launch through surf
-Can lift my motor and paddle right over top of kelp
-Probably a bunch more...
