Suggestions for teaching surf fishing at MB

Post by yumBass »

Hi guys, I’m planning to teach some people surf fishing at MB this upcoming sunday afternoon. It appears to be a deep negative tide according to the charts. I generally fish incoming tides, but never this low.

Do you guys have any suggestions as to how i can maximize the chance of catching anything? I’ll likely bring light carolina rig setups (1 oz) and berkeley sandworms, as well as looking for sand crabs.

This is a good book: https://www.amazon.com/Surf-Fishing-Lig ... 0977248615

It recommends the setup you are using too. Knowing how to spot troughs the fish will be in is important too.

Just a few comments on logistics...

I took my adult boys and their friends fishing a few years ago. Here's my tips,

- Make sure anyone over 16 has a fishing license.
- Pre-tie all rods ahead of time and devise a method to keep them untangled during transport.
- It's nice to have a place for them to put their rods if they want to take a break.
- Choosing a spot with a bathroom nearby is a plus.
- Don't plan on fishing yourself. Help them with their gear and casting.

Good luck and take photos. My trip was one of my most memorable surf fishing outings :)

Thanks! I’ll look for some videos on how to find holes and troughs. Aside from looking for darker areas in the water, are there any clear indicators of troughs?

-Both of the people that want to learn said they will buy a one-day license. These are $20 nowadays! Crazy.
-I will definitely pre-rig the poles. I only have a sedan so I can’t make a cool transport setup like yours though haha
-They are actually planning to have a bonfire, so there will definitely be a spot to put the stuff down if/when they get tired of it
-I was planning on fishing once they got the hang of it, but you’re probably right that i’ll have to keep track of them. My reason for thinking that way is that I want to have them reel in something if possible, by any means.

Lastly, I’ll definitely try to take pictures and update everyone here as a way of thanks for contributing to the conversation!

That's going to be tough falling tide conditions with the very low water late afternoon. If possible to move up your time on the beach to say 12 noon to 3 pm, I think you would have better chances. Tide will be around 3' at noon going down to near 0 by 3 pm. The incoming tide late afternoon into early evening might be more productive but that's late in the day with an earlier sunset which might not work for you.

Good luck and report back if you get a chance.

Nice article at https://surffishingsocalsd.com/ .
Look for any irregularity that could indicate a trough, underwater rock, hole or riptide. Any of these can hold fish. Low tide is the best time to find the troughs (come back when the tide is higher to fish). The fish will move around as the tide changes so you will have to keep moving from spot to spot as the tide changes.

Do you *have to* fish MB?

Low neg tide is golden for rocky beach fishing.

Do you have any suggestions for rocky beaches? I’ve tried Torrey Pines at -0.1 a few weeks ago and it was still super sandy out far

If you like TP, keep going south. Beach becomes rocky about 300 yards north of flat rock.

Hi all, sorry for the super long delay.

We didn’t catch anything haha. The water was cold, but not quite as painfully cold as a month like february. Conditions were great though; blue skies and calm current, although the outgoing tide wasn’t quite to my liking.

Thanks again for all the suggestions! It’s always great to get out on the water.

I’ll try to teach them again come spring or summer when the water starts warming up!
