Random baits

Post by Carpkiller »

Not quite ready for bed? Fire up the microwave and make a few baits. Or a few dozen.

This was made by...doesn't matter. Wish i could reproduce this happy accident..
Pink, silver, chartreuse trout worms about half melted in the mold, then shot through with clear plastisol.

Coreshot experiment and leftover solid red swimmies...

Proud of these baby bass because they turned out as intended...

The only thing worse than a 3700 tackle tray full of baits, and realizing that you need to get out and USE more of them is...
20240927_145108.jpg
...having eight boxes full.

Down the pearlescent mica rabbit hole....

Gonna put the bait molds away for now and make some leadheads to put 'em on...

"I love it when a plan comes together!" - Sitting Bull

So Fat Guys Fishing has a mold for a lure that's very close in shape to a couple of my favorite soft jerkbaits...but with a long flat tail. Of COURSE I bought it...my VISA card isn't maxed out yet. Yet.

Test drove it in a creek where yellow has been a good color...Sometimes. Sunday was one of those times. Mind you, the bass were biting pretty well and the other guy was catching, too. But the new lure accounted for five chunks like this one...nearly 2 pounds, I'd guess.

Much like any soft jerkbait, this one works as a wakebait, crawling/hopping along the bottom, lift-and-fall, and jerking at any depth. And just sitting on the bottom, the flat tail waves around in the water like a worm.

Anxious to try it out in saltwater...gonna make some with silver instead of yellow on the belly...

Man this is making me miss my days of just painting baits! Always special to catch something on a creation of your own, even if it is just a paint job! Awesome work!

That mold was relatively inexpensive, considering that it has 14 cavities so you can make a lot of lures in one squirt of the injector. But I had 'em customize the mold, adding a hook slot in the belly...which more than doubled the cost.

So now I am a lure designer, heh heh.

It's a relief to know the FloookZ soft jerkbait swims as expected. Gonna get a sea trial on the big bay this weekend. Made more colors...red, copper, green, clear/blue glitter, clear/red+blue glitter, green back/clear belly, chartreuse, and even a few clear ones.

Also cranked out a few random swimbaits from other molds to use up the hot plastisol.

All these were made using less than a gallon of new plastic ($46)...and by remelting some old baits. So yeah, injecting plastic baits isn't that expensive (once you get several hundred dollars worth of molds, injectors, and random gear).

That's the way it was with painting. Once I got the airbrush stuff, i built a cheap spray cabinet and some paint from Michaels and I was all set. I also have molds to pour jigs, spinnerbaits, swim jigs, and drop shot weights. The dropshot weights one has been a huge money saver for me. I can pour a couple hundred weights for under $10.

I also like to make jigs, flies and refurb lures. Here's a few photos... Deer Hair Caddis, Lead cast slow pitch jigs and sharpie colored trout spoons.

Speaking of customizing baits, the way the Dark Sleeper baits add the double fins to make the bait weedless is very nice.

Panther Martin uses a single fin: https://www.panthermartin.com/Lures/swi ... addle-Tail

The new mold got here yesterday.

20241119_000800[1].jpg

The body is 2 inches long...when the tail deploys it's 5 inches overall.

Perhaps I should tattoo "I ain't buying any more molds" where the "Perot 2024" ink used to to be.
